Best bang for the buck cpu/mobo combo @ Fry's?

JEDI

the mobo my sempron 2500 was on died.

now i'm using my old k7s5a pro w/duron 850mhz.

i havent been in the cpu market for a long time.

What's the best bang for the buck CPU/mobo combo nowadays?

edit:
i want to reuse my PC2700 memory

$70 range for combo, like i paid for the k7vta3/sempron2500 last year?

that asking too much?

btw- Newegg has combos now?!

you can wait for a sempron 754 combo w/ the ecs 755-a2 for around 70-80 (any cheap fries combo is gonna come w/ an ecs, anyway) it doesn't happen too often though.

at least w/ the 755-a2 i had a pretty good experience 🙂

"Socket 754 for AMD K8 Athlon 64 processor"

isnt the 755-a2 for A64 chips?

dont i need 'socket A' for semprons?

1) Socket 754 does both A64 and Sempron chips (both with IMC), but its single channel (S939 is dual channel)
2) Sempr0ns come in both Socket A and Socket 754 (and Socket 939, but hard to find). it's time to move away from the Socket A architecture... the benefit of the IMC has a dramatic boost in overall performance (at least in my experience 🙂)

arent socket 754 semprons like 3100+?

all the $70 fry's combo specials i;ve seen so far are sempron 2800 + some PC Chips mobo.

yeah; actually, i've seen both sempron 2800+ combos at fries. you have to look at the fine print to figure out if its the socket A version (2.0ghz, 12 x 166, usually coupled with k7vta3 or kt600) or the socket 754 version (1.6ghz, 8 x 200, usually paired with 755-a2 or k8m800-m2)

S754 Sempron 2800+ w/ ECS 755-A2 was $80 two weeks ago. Just check the mercurynews site every few days.

$70 for a motherboard and CPU? For that money, you won't get much better than your Duron setup. This combo is $87 shipped, and features an Athlon XP 2400+. You might be able to find a similar deal on Ebay.

But $70? No, not hardly.

If you can afford it (sell off your Sempron, Duron and motherboard, and you just might), get an Epox EP-8KDA3I and a Sempron 64 2800+ for $140 shipped. Then, overclock the bejesus out of the setup. If necessary, you can get a 32-bit 2600+ for $13 less, but I'd go with the 64-bit 2800+ if at all possible (both can be overclocked to 2.4 GHz, but the 2800+ has double the L2 cache).

If you can't afford $127, maybe you should just pick up this used Athlon 1.3 GHz ($58) to plug into your existing motherboard. You might shave off a few dollars from that price by getting one off Ebay, but I wouldn't count on it.
