slk900a ? isn't that for athlon-xp (socket a) only ?

I use an adaptor.

Azzy, There are more variables in a chip than model number. Also, if you think you have 2.5v running through your chip, you should not be overclocking.

He is talking about the vDIMM ;) He's just saying he can lower the CPU&ram voltage and get the same overclocking results. No need to start throwing wicked barbs at him.

Well of course how old your chip is matters. You ram might be limiting you also, by not responding to voltage. But I'd guess it's your board. MSI aren't known for their overclocking potential.

That's pretty crazy Lithan, and i do appologise for questioning your claims earlier..I just this post before entering here..

And it put me in a doubtful mood.

This northyB may be the best bang for the buck of all time if it consistanly OCs like this.

No problem man.

I bought it after seeing 3 newegg reviews in a row putting it at 3.6ghz-4ghz. Also got a PM from someone at Xtreme who has his at 1.7vcore 4ghz on water.

From the new overclockers buyers guide on Anandtech

On 3 different 754 boards, we reached 255 to 260 CPU settings at the stock multiplier of 9. A little quick math shows that the Sempron reached 2340MHz with ease at stock voltage.

From 1.8 to 2.34 on stock cooling and voltage (they'd mention otherwise if they needed anything other than what came with the CPU), and for around $200 for CPU and motherboard... Spend some more and you can get a A64 2800+ and get twice the cache

While the price difference is only a mere $13 from the Sempron 3100 to the A64 2800 these cpu's are almost identicle apart from 64 bit instructions and more cache. The benchmarks here show the 3100 being very close to the a64 2800 in a range of tests. As for the 64 bit instructions, it still seems to be in its infancy. You can get a trial of the 64 bit winxp, some drivers, but almost nothing is written in 64 bit as of yet. As for the upgrade path I dont see this being a problem. It will take around 2 years for 64 bit to become mainstream and be of full benifit to 64 bit cpu's. As for overclockability, I say the 3100 would be able to get higher clock speeds and be a better preformer in general.

Not quite true...
The number of AMD64 software developers passed 1000 in Feb. Almost all of the game developers are already converted to AMD64 tools, and many others (e.g. Adobe) are ready but not releasing until WinXP64 is released...

If you want inexpensive and to support SFF, I would recommend the following:

AMD Athlon XP Mobile 2200+ 35 Watt ($77 shipped from Newegg)
Shuttle AN35N-Ultra ($58 shipped from Newegg)
Speeze Falconrock II HSF ($15.98 shipped from Newegg)

This will allow you to hit 3200+ performance levels at a modest 1.65vcore or so. Coupled with the awesome cooling power of the whisper quiet Falconrock II, you should have a quiet stable SFF setup for a mere $150.98 shipped.

I thought SFFs come with custom motherboard already installed. What SFF platform and case do you recommend for this setup?

I didnt know that, good point. If you went to a local retailer looking for 64 bit programs I dont think you could find any. Its good to know that they are on their way though.

^^ This is the best bang for the buck, period. Although I would change CPU to mobile 2400 which is a barton with 512KB lvl 2 cache for the same price, $77.

Overclcoked, to ~2400 it's takes a full fledged 3.2 precott to match it and a Cel D minimum of 3.9. At mere $150 you can't help but become a AMD fan.:)

hmmm....I've never heard of SFF with full size ATX board (like AN35N) in it. In which of your dreams have you seen this happening ?

It was probably just a joke. I mean look at his avatar. He's a nerd. Nerds tell bad jokes. ;)

offtopic but... the reason nothing is at retailers is because no 64-bit OS is out. once it's out, they'll start selling. it's already known that there are 64-bit versions of Far Cry and UT2004 in "internal testing" at the game developer, which probably means "waiting until Win64 is out" :p

I have Barton 2500+ (non mobile) on AN35N-Ultra, and cannot get it stable on anything above 210MHz FSB, and even that take 1.8 Vcore (anything less and it fails prime-95 within the first two hours). I use Thermalright SLK-900A heatsink w/80mm fan, and the temp reach 55C under prime-95 at this voltage, idle about 45C (at the default the voltage 1.65V the temps are 8-10C lower). I'm sure it's not the memory that's causing the problems above 210, as memtest passes at 215, and the RAM is actually rated DDR433 (PC3500). So overall my Athlon XP is running stable at 11x210 = 2310, and together with my 9700 pro, the machine gets a score just above 40K in aquamark.
