Best bang for the buck 240/256GB SSD?

Title says it all. I have been looking into the Vertex 3/4, Samsung 830, and the Intel 520 SSDs but I was wondering what other people have experienced with. Any help would be greatly appreciated! 😀

Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240GB easy.

SF2281 with 32nm Toshiba Toggle NAND, tier 1 SSD (eg: among THE fastest out there)

$249

Other tier 1 drives in it's class (Max IOPS, Wildfire, etc) are $350-400

The problem is that it's not in stock lol. Other than what was suggested, I'd stick with the Samsung 830, Corsair Performance Pro, or Plextor M3/M3P. The Corsair and Plextor both use the Marvell controller as well as newer Toshiba Toggle Nand (34nm and 24nm respectively). The Samsung is on sale @ the egg for $290 and is probably what I'd go with if I wanted something right now. It's a shame as the PP and M3 were around that price or lower last week.

Edit: Actually the Samsung is $270 if you use promo code EMCNENJ49 and I don't think I'd pass this up - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820147164

Oh and here's my M3 😛

I ordered the bare 256GB Samsung 830 yesterday, using the Newegg promo. Based on popular consent, it is one of the safest bets at a very reasonable price

I only recommend the crucial m4, Samsung 830, Intel drives with Intel controllers, and the corsair performance pro. Anything with sand force I would not recommend to people but that is just my personal standpoint. I am not an expert but I have researched a lot before I made an ssd purchase.

Samsung 830 and Plextor M3 Pro are the fastest SSDs currently that don't cost all your organs to buy. 😀

The Crucial M4 is also up there and can be had for under a dollar a gig and I recommend it!

The Vertex4 is a strange beast. Aside from it coming from OCZ, it does show promise but the firmware is very young and thus I'd avoid buying it today. Just sit and wait. Marvell's latest controller may be out before OCZ gets all the issues worked out too!

For price using the Newegg promo the 830 is THE best bang for the buck right now. If you can get the M4 for a few bucks cheaper go for that as well. It does not bench as fast as the 830 but in everyday use you would NEVER see the differences. The ones that claim they do are not typical users or they are experiencing placebo effects. 😉

Thank you everyone for your advice! I think I'll go with the Samsung 830 if the promo continues until this Saturday (Payday). I just hope it lasts until then, but if not, I'll see if I can find the Mushkin Chronos Deluxe or the Crucial M4 😀

I thought it was the latest Marvell controller in the Vertex 4, with a custom firmware?

If I were to buy a 240-256GB SSD today, I'd probably pick up one of those Agility 3 240GB for $170 after rebate and coupon code.

It is Marvell for sure, speculation is that it is the new controller as well ... http://www.anandtech.com/show/5741/ocz-confirms-octane-and-vertex-4-use-marvell-based-silicon

Speculated, yes. Time will tell and yes that's why I made my remark about a properly tuned (and compatible) firmware.

I would avoid SF drives unless you know exactly what and how your application will work with them, etc. Intel's 520 is the best SF based drive currently available but it's expensive compared to the others.
