Best bang for buck suit maker?

Was shopping for ties the other day and took a look at the suits. I mostly own sub-$200 suits that are heavy and sweat makers and noticed that the $1,200 suits (marked down to $950 at TJ Max) weigh about 1/3rd as much and have much thinner material, which would help alot since I pour out sweat even if it's 75 degrees out there (I take the subway and walk about 4 miles a day for work all while wearing a suit.. yay to a job in sales).

Are there any suits out there in the sub $500 range that offer the same light weight and thinness?

Most quality suits are made from wool and summer-weight wool suits are probably what you are looking for. There are some blended suits that have wool/linen/cotton/etc. that may be lighter but may become wrinkled pretty quickly.

As far as selection and availibility for sub $500, BB during semi-annuals is probably the best bet though this semi annual in June was 40% instead of 50% means > $500. Has to be the 1818 line or higher.

If you dig around however, you could probably get better suits for around the same price but that requires a scavenger hunt.

Might want to consider Darya Trading (sold through Amazon or its own website, which I forget). Suits are all knock-offs of famous Italian brands, but are pretty decent for the prices. I've bought one and it's lightweight compared to the Macy's crap I've had for years.

There are a few huge threads on the brand both here (hot deals) and on slickdeals. Just a thought to look at.

personally, I would avoid Darya. I've posted about this in the "hot deals" area. While they may have been reviewed OK by a website like Ask Andy, there is no replacement for a good retailer that will stand behind their products.

That's not even to mention the ridiculous claims Darya has, including their MSRP and their wool quality. As I mentioned in the HD area, not all wools are created equal and while they may be quasi-regulated, they aren't subject to too tight of controls.

To me it's akin to the "thread count" argument for sheets. Some sheets may claim super-high thread counts but the way they count them differs. Furthermore, the cheap high TC sheets will wear faster and feel like crap sooner.

Same goes for a suit.

While the saying is that you can make a cheap suit look good with good tailoring, you can't make a cheap suit look like a good suit compared to a good suit with good tailoring.

Buying a BB suit for $500 during the semi-annual sale will give you a suit that will last decades with proper care and will look great.

BB is going to be your best bet, IMHO buying a $500+ suit is best done in person.

Oh, try a Banana Republic outlet store, or any other outlet store for that matter. I got a Hugo Boss jacket that normally retails for $1000 here (I checked in the store) for $250. It was normal 50% off in the outlet store, then another 50% off that for some sale or something.

I got a full Banana Republic suit for $250 too. You have to mess around with sizes a bit, and will probably have to get them altered, but getting a $700 suit for $250 plus alterations isn't bad.

anything from Banana republic will be heavy and not what the OP is looking for!!

If the OP is willing to pay, you really cannot go wrong with a custom tailored suit!!

Hmm, true. Although, I did get a pair of cotton dress pants there that are super thin and light... it's almost like wearing tissue paper.

But yeah the jackets will likely be heavier. Still, it doesn't hurt to look, and finding a high quality suit that's thin and made of wool is not really going to be feasible at a very low price point.

Some suggestions:

Target - Merona suits (nice looking/fitting jackets for $60 but the pants looked a little bigger than I liked)
H&M
Banana Republic (only on sale)
Express (ditto)

Also on Overstock they have some Ben Sherman suits at $280 that look decent.
