Best bang for buck SSD $150-$200

Not too sure with all the different brands and specs on these. Maybe someone could give me the cliffnotes for a first ssd purchase. Looking for something:

  • Fast
  • Reliable
  • 80 - 120 gb

Im the kind of guy that would take my chances and choose performance over warranty length given the brand's fail rate is low, which I believe Intel holds the crown. But dont get me wrong, a nice warranty definitely has its worth.

I have asus m4a785-m mobo which is SATA 3 & Support RAID 0,1,10,JBOD

Suggestions? Tips? As usual, thank you for reading.

I labored over this for sometime and decided while not really "the best" the Crucial m4 seemed to be the safest bet and best overall. 128GB $210. Maybe there are better choices in your size range though since SSDs slow down some when you go below 200GB.

using windows u might want at least 90GB ssd. I had been looking thru ssd drive months ago but they seemed a lot less stable than now, and too much $$$ for the lower cost drives when looking at size speed failures. I use Linux tho so 60 a lot more than i need, i have everything i wanted installed and I'm barely over 5GB used.

Though it was hard to read, I think that jae is right. Even my 80gb x25-m g2 is a bit small for the OS + a couple of games, I'd shoot for a 96gb+ size. There were a LOT of deals for 1$/gb or better AR on BF, I'd keep my eyes peeled for something more like that. You don't need sata III unless you are a real power user, get a sata II drive and save $$ or get MORE drive for your $$.

so would a 60gb be faster?

the smaller units bentchmark at a slower level, not faster.

that being said, the difference in real world is not really there to tell the difference.

80GB is about were I would be looking if you want the OS on the drive as well. (what I am using).

might be able to find a 120 if you loost at sata 2 drives, but if you want sata 3 then 96GB/100GB might be the top (and not sure on quality)

By the way, the intel 320 series had a major firmware bug that wiped a lot of people's drives earlier this year. They're not using their own controllers anymore iirc, either. It looks like the new firmware has fixed the issue, but it's still a bit scary to think that even intel has issues like this.
