Can someone name some motherboard and price combo's which are realistic(as in will likely overclock to).

ie
K7-700 + GFD+ WHATEVER MOBO = $

and preferably their relative performance
compared to a celeron @ 850.

I'm trying to get an idea what step for my next computer to take now that i have a celeron 850. I want much better performance and not a WHOLE lot more in price. Please post chips that are clockable today (ie duron doesnt really count yet)

Thanks! Your help is mucho appreciated

If I was going w/Athlon I would seriously consider Abit KA7-100 mobo but don't know about Athlon since I haven't tried one yet.
For Intel's, I'd go for P3-700e cB0 w/BE6-II or P3V4X and test your luck.

If your really looking for the lowest $$'s, the best bang for the buck is prolly the FIC SD11 and Classic Athlon 700 combo. Just make sure the FIC is rev 1.08 or higher.

Best bang for the buck would definitively have to be the Duron with all the praise thats been going on about it ... the only problem is that you should wait a bit to get a good mobo... classic 700 with abit ka7 also rocks...

We should know more in the next week or so for sure, but Tom's took 4 of the Durons on a pre-production Asus board up to 950 mhz. The thing is, the release boards may or may not have the jumper block making O/Cing possible

ricepudding, you can wait at least another year for duron to settle
down but for us folks who need something now to overclock to some extreme measure a Celeron II is a must

hahaha...lol guess i must of sent it twice somehow... anyways i for one have an athlon 700 classic , which from what ive ascertained isnt too shabby in the o/c department its jsut that the cache is really limiting the celery... i have nothing against it in fact i have a celery 466 which i love i just prefer my athlon...lol(wonder why??)

I would suggest a Athlon 700 or 850 and a KA7-100 mobo. The "classic" Athlon platform on KX133 chipsets in very stable now. I would venture to say that an Athlon platform will outperform the P3 platform, excluding super high-end setups like i820 and DDR ram. I bought my 850 for $300 and my mobo for $150. I am not using a GFD to overclock. I am running a 1ghz rig for $450, sounds like a good deal to me. Just my opinion...

I'd like to present an alternative view...

My system:
P3-700 flipchip, cB0 stepping ($230-$240 for retail version)
Stable (Q3, 3DMark, Seti, UT) at 933/133 out of the box, at DEAFULT VCore of 1.65 V

I added a Alpha 6035 and 50W Leufkens Peltier, to reach 1001 MHz at 1.70 V.

MSI 6309 MoBo (via 133A): $95
256 MB Cas2 PC133 sdram
Geforce2 GTS
SB Live

My point it: the P3-700 cB0 stepping is GREAT value. You will reach 933/133 almost guaranteed. And that's not bad for under $250...
