Looking for a relativly fast, cool running, AGP video card for relatively cheap... I guess the 7600 series fits the bill best? I'd like to spend no more than $70 if possible...

How does the X800 compare to a 7000 series Nvidia card in performance and power consumption?

a 16 pipe X800GTO would beat the 7600GS in overall speed but would consume much much more power. If you're lucky you'll b able to clock the X800GTO to 500/1000 or 560/1180 @_@

if he was able to do that, he'd be the first person that i've ever heard of to do it with an r430. only the r480's clock that well; the r430 ones, although unlockable, only clock to like 450 on the core (i think mine clocked to 550 on the ram). i would still prefer the 7600gs, as they typically overclock very well too, since they're just underclocked 7600GT cores (especially if he can get one with DDR3 mem).

most 7600GS's can do 600 on the core with after market cooler but few ever break 900mhz memory. A few people have gotten to 1ghz though but not enough to hang your hopes on it.

Bought the low profile MSI HDCP one for a friend and got it to 540/900 with stock cooling/volts but the ram gave me the big stinky at 910mhz.

Oh, if u like AA and higher resolutions then the X800GTO will still be your buddy vs 7600GS, not to mention the supperior AA quality as well though video playback quality is better on the 7xxx series : /

And there is no GDDR3 7600GS, the 7600GS is a different GPU than the 7600GT, it is not an underclocked 7600GT, it cannot even support GDDR3 at all. So you probably won't get very good results overclocking the ram for higher memory bandwidth which is a good part of the 7600GT's strength. And before anyone tries to name Gigabytes 7600GS for having GDDR3 know this, it's not a 7600GS, it's an oc'd 7600GT rebadge.

To retor to the below reply on the "EDIT : on newer games"

Not much is going to be done with $70 ish for newer games to start with. So might as well get a good card that does decent on low res on new games and excellent on high res at older games. That would be the X800GTO.

The card is for my dad's old computer... I wanted to get him something better than the Geforce 3 Ti 500 that's in there now but has a broken fan... He doesn't have anything better than a "normal" cheapo 300W PS, so I wanted a low power card. The games he'd play are several years old...

I'm thinking the 7000 series Nvidia cards are the best bet for his application...

Hmmm, what about a 9800pro or a 6600gt? The 6600gt will probably use less power than the 9800 and will surely have better fps. Each card will be cheap from eBay or the For Sale section on here.

I just read that your dad plays games several years old. If that is the case then a 9800 pro or 6600gt would suffice

Actually, the 6600gt uses almost as much power as a 7900gt, and the 9800pro uses almost as much power as a x800xt. Hard to believe, but true. If power consumption is of concern, then stick with either Nvidia 7-series or Ati x800 series.

If you feel lucky, you can go to eBay and snipe an X850XT for less than $70 (which is what I did). It may take a lot of patience, though.

x1950Pro AGP are running about $220-$230. I was looking at them last night. A buddy was wanting info on something better than his 9600Pro. Which by the way is running about $75 according to pricegrabber. If you can get a x850XT for less than $70 anywhere then go for it! Those cards are getting rare but the next best thing to a 7800GS or the x1950Pro. Hell, I'd pay a $100 for it they are that good. As far as AGP goes anyway.
