Best backwards compatible RAM

With the recent price wars on PC3200 RAM, I am trying to convince the person in charge to upgrade the 4 old Gateway desktops in our student org at school. The CPUs are 2GHz Northwood on a 400MHz(?) FSB. I think the RAM is PC2100. Will PC3200 RAM work? Which one is a better bet for compatibility?

Right now, they are running XP Home with only 256MB of RAM and getting 1GB in each system will be a huge improvement, right?

Thanks,
Jassi

Wow... PC3200 will downclock to PC2100 speeds.
The leap from 256 to 512MB will show larger performance increases than 512MB to 1GB, but depending on what you're doing with the computers. Get at least 512MB. It will be a *massive* overhaul.

I did install it but I forgot to post here and the information slipped out of my head. The computers are mainly used for Engineering software (simulation and such), Office and the occasional games.

Does the old Northwood absolutely need dual channel configuration?
