Best audio encoding

Was just wondering what the best audio codec was transfering some music and wanted to know what to encode them as..mp3, mp4, lame? i think was one anyway thanks
 
Rip to lossless FLAC using Exact Audio Copy. Transcode (in a different folder tree) to mp3 or AAC for your portable using dbPowerAmp ($14 after 30 days because they gots to pay them mp3 patentholders).
