Onboard audio is all thats needed these days. Apart from that i recommend the asus xonar D2X or the DX if you're on a budget.

Gaming? Probably one of the X-Fi derived cards from Auzentech. With the SoundBlaster based cards, you can run EAX in Windows 7 via Alchemy for DirectSound titles. That is, if you play any games that make use of EAX.

I like PCI board sound cards. They have alot of great software that you will never get from those AC7 onboard things. They are just fine for quality, but I like the software package.

For gaming, not really sure what the benefits are. I use mine mainly for recording/sound editing/ etc.

Hmmmmmm, sounds to me like you can help out in the audio forums, but for PC gaming you may have a biased opinion.

As for the OP, I recommend onboard sound for a little while. If you play your games and find you just arent getting the full experience, go for a cheap Turtle Beach sound card. Thats what I went to after my Audigy 1 pissed me off too many times.

This. I gave up on Creative cards and with with the Auzentech Prelude a couple/3 years ago. Although HT Omega makes a decent card too (Striker). Basically it boils down to personal preference. A casual/occasional gamer might be satisfied w/onboard. My 2 cents

This. I think Forte is the way to go now for gaming, but not certain.

That board has a ALC888 . It is just as good/better as most PCI card solutions. On board audio is not like 5 years ago when it was all done in software and use up cpu resources. All the processing is hardware except for things like EAX.

A dedicated sound card is definitely worth it over on-board simply for the audio quality. The DAC's are better, the op-amps are better, and there's (generally) less noise than the on board audio.

Personally I don't see the point of an X-Fi card or any one with EAX anymore. I have an X-Fi and it sounds great, but games rarely support EAX anymore. If I'm wrong someone let me know!
