I have several DX8 Geforce4 Ti cards and know for a fact the older 44.03 Detonators give them the best performance. The newer Dets are for DX9 cards and actually slow the older GF4 Ti's down some.

I have a Radeon 9000 Pro 128MB @ 310/620 here, should I go for the newest Cat 4.1 or is there an older version that gives the DX8 R250 core better performance? I haven't used anything newer than the Cat 3.6 back when I was using a Radeon 9700 Pro.

Firstly, Cat4.2 is the newest. ;)

Secondly, take a look into the Omega driver series. They usually offer better IQ at a minor or no speed hit.

OK, 4.2 sounds like it is worth a try.

By the way I have another 9700 Pro here that I picked up for a friend, so I tried the Cat 4.2 with it. It still has washed out colors in comparison to the GF4 Ti. Especially the reds, they look almost orange.
