Hi All.

I have finally had, enough of my Nvidia card.

I am looking at getting new Radeon 9800XT 256mg , for my new Rig.

I will be using it for graphics design, encoding and gaming. I will be using video in, and video out options. I am looking at also getting a second LCD monitor, will these cards support a second display.

I am i better of buying a Matrox Prahelia perhaps??

As i have never used ATI products, in the past, i am looking for your recommendations.

I had a look at the Gigabyte, and Sapphire options.

Can you help me, in this decision.

Thanks

The best Radeon 9800XT is a 9800 Pro. Let me explain: when a 9800XT is $450 and a 9800 Pro is $200, it is probably a very bad idea to pay $250 for about 10% more performance.

With that in mind, the best 9800 Pro should be the one built by ATi.

he is right, but looking at your computer, you dont seem to be one that is short on cash. just get an ATi card.

Not for gaming -- performance is horrible.

9800xt: video in was limited to the Asus last I checked, but a better choice might be either a stock ATI or the Sapphire heatpipe-cooled model just reviewed at www.HardOCP.com paired with a LeadTek TV card for video-in.

Or if you can wait a couple of months, the better of the new nV and ATI high-end cards that will be out.

Ill let you in on a little secret.

Newegg has the Saphire 9800 Atlantis Pro 256 megger with the chrome one piece heatsink. It has an XT core and memory, just loaded with the Pro bios. Reflashing it with the XT bios will unlock the card. Dont know how many newegg has left, but thats the route i would take. Picked mine up for $324 shipped. I got the retail.. The OEM is like $9 less or something.

This is the one i have below...

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...-102-290&catalog=48&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

and this is the oem version of it...

I thought that all the 9800XT's were actually built by ATI themselves and just rebranded by the individual vendor, so they would all be the same. As far as I know, the only 9800XT not built by ATI is Asus'. I could be wrong on this, but I thought I read this somewhere... Anyone know anymore about this?

...and wow! my hat if off to that rig! nice....

Thanks heaps, guys.

I know, that new GPU's are coming out very soon.

This is my business system, primarily, and i dont have the luxury of time. I want to get the best results available now.

My card, i would be interested in selling it. I live in Australia...lol

Here you go. This data is from the February 2004 issue of CPU (Computer Power User)

Video Encoder/Decoder VIVO: S-Video & Comp. 3DMark03

ASUS Radeon 9600 XT Yes Yes 2434
Gigabyte R9800 XT No No 2441
Hercules 3D Prophet 9600 XT No No 2445
HIS Excalibur Radeon 9600 XT No No 2440
Sapphire Atlantis 9800XT No No 2446
VisionTek XTASY 9800 XT No No 2446

The article is pretty comprehensive, so you might want to buy a copy.

"Fed up" is probably the wrong term.

I am just looking for a change, and i am willing to give the Radeon series a try.

In all the reviews, they are consistently faster, and offer better AA and AF.

Go for it! I'm using a BBA 9800 XT, fastest card I've ever owned (check the reviews for benchmarks). On my rig (i845 400FSB see below), I went from a 3dMark03 score of 3,800 with a 9600Pro to over 6,000 with the 9800XT. Also, people sometime report that the card gets real hot. I haven't experienced this (my case temps stay between 34 to 49C). Just don't look at the temperature shown in the ATI Overdrive panel (it is incorrect, take about 15-20C off the value).

49C is disgustingly hot for a case temp..
