I'm looking to build a system in the next couple of weeks and i would like to know some of your opinions on the best hard drives. Please tell me what hard drives are the quietest, and fastest.

I'm mainly looking for a 80 or 100gb hard drive.

D740X Ultra DMA133 7200 RPM

get the 6L080L4 The letter "L" contained in the model number denotes that this drive was manufactured in Japan with a Fluid Dynamic Motor

The Fluid Dynamic Motor which replace The Ball Bearing Motor from the previous version supposed to be quieter.
And if you want a fast Drive you can't go wrong with ATA133.

I chose the Maxtor D740X.

Why you ask? Well, it doesn't seem to be reputed around here as the fastest anymore, but.
 • For an IDE drive it is certainly a very fast drive.
 • It seems to be generally considered reliable.
 • Maxtor has a very good service reputation.
 • IBM has had terrible press (75 GXP debacle, suspicions about 60GXP) recently.
 • Newegg was out of 120GXP's at the time I purchased ;).

Performance at any cost: Western Digital's "JB" drives with 8MB cache.
Second would be the IBM 120GXP, but they come with a potentially dubious reliability record of late and so I can't recommend them.
The Western Digital WD1000/1200BB drives are about as fast as the 120GXP.

Maxtor D740X would be next, and the slowest of the current gerneration 7200RPM IDE drives is the Seagate Barracuda IV, though this is somewhat off-set by the fact that it's also the quietest 7200RPM IDE drive.

If you want to save some money then the Maxtor D740X and Seagate Barracuda IV are both usually cheaper then the other drives, and still have excellent performance.
