How fricking old is your desktop if it doesn't have a network card? You can get them for like $5.

no, no, no, its a new desktop that has dual gigabit lan built in

i dont have a WIRELESS network card

i've tried ICS . . . and i dont have a spare router to use (the router i have has to be on all the time because other computers use it)

You can get a wireless USB I/F for $10-15.

Or just get another router for $10.

You are wasting more of your time trying to avoid the problem than solving it.

a switch will cost you $5-10 as well

edit...why not just plug both computers into your router?

Only reason for not using the same router is if all the ports are currently in use and none can be pulled off for any amount of time.
