You get the best performance with smplayer
MPC-hc has a lot of support for filters and you can get it with smooth video player,if your PC can handle it you can play anything at 60fps or whatever your display supports,so you can get much higher quality.

Kodi if you want to use a remote. Same engine as VLC basically, but with a modern 10 foot gui.

That is a Windows app. Closest thing for OSX is MPlayer OSX Extended.
