What is the best anti-virus software I can buy? Ive had some bad experiences with Norton and the GData ones, so other than those Im up for suggestions

Are the BitDefender or RAV Anti-Virus softwares any good?

Kaspersky's one of the top ones, and they have a 30-day free, fully-functional trial period. Give it a whirl: http://www.kaspersky.com/trials I also saw where you can get a free 6-month trial of F-Secure, another reputable one that uses some of Kaspersky's tech: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/viruses/wsc/en-us/default.mspx

Bigger picture: also try a Limited account and fully enable your DEP too. And keep the system patched, including any add-on media players, IM programs and browsers that you use. If you use Office2000, or pieces of it like Word2000 or Outlook2000, then hit the Office Update site repeatedly until it's coming up "clean."

FWIW -- my $02 = I am running NOD32 and Kaspersky on each of two desktops. I'm very pleased with both compared to anything I've ever run before (Norton. McAfee and AVG)and when I did all the research about AV programs last year to make my choice they were both scoring at the top thru various testing. I tried them both to see which I'd like best with intent to switch all our computers over to one AV with a multi-user license. Gotta make that decision soon... no winner yet though... flip a coin perhaps?... ;-)
Cheers...

NOD32, in my opinion provides the best balance between resource use and error detection rate.

I swear by it...i get a kick out of removing Norton off many machines and install NOD32 instead.

Norton is "good" only because it has a good detection rate, so is Kaspersky (best detection rate)...but Norton is a resource hog and KAV is WAY too system intrusive.

NOD32 does exactly what a virus killer is supposed to do.....good detection rate and barely notcieable that it's even there (except if it catches a virus :)
