What do you think is the best for Windows2000?

3 of the ones above were recommended to me, anyone know the pros and cons of each? Which is better?

I wouldn't use retail McAfee VirusScan v5; v4.5.1 licensed is actually much better, and despite the version number, is newer than v5.

I don't know about windows 2000 specifically but I have always found Norton Antivirus to be a superior product to anything else. In the corporate world, though, mcafee seems more popular for some reason.

I swore off McAfee a year or two ago-it was frustratingly dificult to get periodic updates. Norton is, and always was, very easy to update and they have new virus definations weekly or even more often.

If your paranoid, or operating in those areas of the web where viruses are more likely, I suggest running two antivirus programs-a popular title like Norton and something more obscure. My theory is that the virus writers are certainly aware of Norton and the like, so if possible, they will try their best to defeat the popular program.

Was it v5? NAI releases new SuperDATs every Wednesday here. I prefer the SuperDATs because they upgrade your engine as well as defs. I've never had a problem making the PCs on my company's LAN get auto upgrades via VirusScan console. In v4.5.1, you can set failover to multiple LAN and WAN servers.

NeoMadHatter: What version of McAfee? Engine level? Service pack? DATs? What problems were you seeing? I'm not saying VirusScan is the best, but after using it for years, being on the beta team, cruising NAI's forums, etc. I've learned how to tweak it pretty well. I support a ~2000 user WAN, and AFAIK my customization of VS is working fine across the board. Before my company implemented my McAfee suggestions, my local site was the only one that didn't propagate e-mail virii, worms, trojans, etc. Now, hopefully none of the rest of them ever will, either...

where do you get mcafee 4.5.1?

I have 5.something and don't like it as much as the version 4.something that I used to have.

The "official" corporate licensed product upgrades are available here. Unfortunately, you will need a grant number to get it.

celeritas: I always updated to the latest, so i think the latest i had was VirusScan 5. But i decided to stop using that because it kept crashing my system and slowing it down big time. Thanks for the help though, but i'll stay with Norton, it seems to be working. I don't like big fancy anti-virus. just something that does the job.

Actually, the "latest" VirusScan is v4.5.1. It was released 5/2001. As I said, it's far superior to v5.

I just installed NAV 2001 Pro 7.0 last night. And of course it crashed my WIn2k.

Upon trying to load into my tray, Win2k reboots, and then same cycle over and over again. I'm pretty sure it was Norton AntiVirus b/c I never seen this before installing it. I ended up going into my Win98, (thankgod for dualboot), and moved the NAV files to a different dir. The next time I went into Win2k, it booted normal, and gave me a warning about not finding NAV. but at least I'm got into Win2k!!! Suffice to say it's not on my HD anymore.

Damn piece of crap!!!

I've used Norton and PcCillin in W2K. I like PcCillin the best. It finds a new virus before Norton. This has happened 2 times by chance.

I'm still using Norton at this time, but when it's time to buy new definitions, it's back to Trend's PcCillin for me.

Another vote for NAV here. But then, I got it for free, so that's probably why :)

Kaspersky AvP Gold is by far the best of the products you listed and has daily updates, NAV is bloatware and a bad resource hog that does not detect most trojans. Mcaffe is just plain crap.

Its easy to tell the noob's arround here, they recomend products such as Norton or Mcaffe (the big names) when there are much better products available, some are even FREE.

noob? Umm, OK. Use whatever works for you. Different strokes...

Every antivirus solution needs some fine tuning to be truly effective, so expecting it to work right out of the box flawlessly is unrealistic. IMHO, it seems the number of those who jump on the trendy, whiny bandwagon of "that sucks!" far outnumber those that actually devote the intelligence, time and elbow grease necessary to make anything work well.

WEll here is my opinion, since I have owned and used both or W2k and Win98. Take it for what it is worth. I have used both for over a year and my honest opinion is that Norton is far better, simple to use, and I find the email scanning and AutoProtect features to be far easier and superior to McAfee. I liked McAfee for a long time, had it off an on for as long as I have been on the internet (too long to recall). I just found the interface and updating of McAfee to be cumbersome and annoying. With the start of the McAfee clinic even more so. The other feature I like about Norton is it's Liveupdate, quarranteen features.

Lastly, I had McAfee running on my work system (LAN) (Medical software @ a clinic) and the system kept having problems. Just on a wim I through on Norton, and it picked up 3 viruses that McAfee missed. Nuff said I think.

AVP is the best by far. Doesn't take *nearly* as much resources as norton or mcafee. And it just sits in your system tray, scanning everything, without bothering you or trying to take over your comp or telling you to reboot or anything. How it should be.

Another vote for AVP. Norton a close second, although I just had a very similar experience to GundamF91's.

I have a dual boot machine and am running both AVP and NAV on Win98. I only have AVP on W2K. A couple of nights ago I tried loading NAV 2001 on W2K. Big mistake. I couldn't get it to boot after I installed it. I had to boot to Win98 and remove the folders.
