So summer is coming up and the bugs are coming out.

I would like to keep the door to my apartment open to get a cool breeze coming through and not have to use the aircon.

I used this here last year:

OFF

And It didnt work that great.

Anyone have some suggestions for what I can put at my door to prevent bugs from coming in?

Burn a citronella candle. 🙂

Also, something I could use fairly often. I dont want to have to keep a stockpile of candles if i dont have to.

How about a bug zapper?

All ya need is a powerful fan aimed OUT the door. It can't be a wimpy one. I've got an old style belt driven fan for just this occasion.

umm keep the door closed?🙂

i used to swear by the mosquito coils when i was camping alot down in fl though

A link in another thread says zappers don't work for mosquitos.🙁

Gasoline!!! FTW!

But just in case you didn't know. A lot of county health depts have trucks that spray insecticides for free. Call your local health depts and see if they offer such services. They can drive through and fog your area to cut down on mosquitos. It usually helps if they do it a few times a month and the mist will travel about 200 yards so you need to be specific about where you need it sprayed.

I did an internship a few years back, where my basic job was to track and monitor west nile virus for a county, so i have some practical tips regarding this topic

first, the best mosquito traps utliize carbon dioxide, AND light... So a bug zapper or trap that utilizes light and dry ice works best

remove ALL standin water from your yard...this includes small puddles that could happen anywhere water is stagnant and sits for over a week....even a body of water smaller than the contents of a shot glass can be support aedes vexans, the mosquito that transmits west nile virus to humans

sprays that deter mosquitoes work best when there is no wind...kinda no brainer, but o well

wear light color clothing..squitoes like dark colored clothing...i have seen this in action, it makes a difference

The roll-on mosquito repellent (especially for the guy in Asia) work wonders. Just make sure you get enough DEET. A stick of that is great to have all the time with you and is a great way to pick up women too.

OHHH..spray on mosquito repellant should be sprayed on the CLOTHING...not directly on the skin. Thats not because the heatlh concerns etc, it really is better to have it sprayed on the clothing as opposed to the skin...however, if you are in shorts and a t-shirt, then spray a lil on the exposed skin

I could kill that many with a swat of the hand on Hunting Island (SC).

That cant be real. Ive killed more then that while watering the plants in houston. Those guys swarm like crazy and i was actually able to kill 3 with one slap.

mosquitos can only fly about 6mph. A fan will keep them out if you set it up correctly and will increase your breeze. Also, no chem or fire hazard as with deet and candles.
