hey,
i was just wondering, what is the best amd motherboard for a 1.4ghz thunderbird that has the features of raid and ddr? i was planning to get 2x30gb IBM hard drives, so i was looking for a stable, and simple (easy to configure) motherboard to use. i heard the epox used all jumpers, so i am a little affraid of that, and i'm not sure which is better...promise or highpoint.

thanks

The Epox 8K7A+ is a great board for RAID and the price is really good. It doesn't use all jumpers. You set one jumper to go from 100 MHz FSB to 133, and then you can manipulate the FSB further from the BIOS. If you are going to overclock and want to change the multiplier settings or the voltage then there are some jumpers and dipswitches you will have to manipulate, but it is really easy to use and a great board overall.

NelsonMuntz, your posts are always so concise and well-worded...you've almost convinced me to buy this board! (C'mon AT, where's that KG7R review?????) Later, Nelson. :)

Personally I'm leaning towards the Abit KG7-Raid. Those 4 Dimm slots look very tempting to me, hehe.

I'm still kinda waiting till someone does a review of it though.

None of them :|

The only good DDR boards currently use the AMD761 northbridge, but they all get stuck with the stupid Via686B south bridge :|
My DVD player still won't work right, and I'm blaming it on Via because I bloody well want to.

Ok...now that I'm done that rant...the Epox 8K7A+ is probably the most popular choice. Nice 6PCI board with lots of tweaking options, and it doesn't cost that much. And contrary to my mini-rant with the newest 4in1 drivers the problems with the 686B are cleared up. I just can't figure out what's wrong with my DVD player and it's making me a bit pissy.

Personally I would take an MSi K7Master (doesn't have RAID though) because it's fully jumperless and with my very poor vision jumpers are difficult to manipulate with the board in a case, but as long as you are ok with a few jumpers here and there I think the Epox 8K7A+ is your best bet.

Whatever you chose at this point it should definately be an AMD761 north bridge.

The Sis735S and nVidia nForce 420 look promising but they aren't available yet.
