Best AMD Processor to get?

My current rig is an evga 7800gt @ 480/1100, antec truepower 550w psu, 120gb maxtor hdd, evga sli mobo, 1gb mushkin pc3200, and an opteron 144. Well, so far I am not too impressed with the performance of the opteron 144, it is ok but nothing stellar. And oc'ing it is a bit of a mixed bag. So my question is should I rma this and get something better. I can either stick with this 144, get a 146, or spend about $30 more and get a 3700+ san diego. I don't really think that I should go dual core as I feel that it is useless right now, all I do is play games and surf the internet. I don't do any heavy multi-tasking, and gaming performance is generally greater with single core. Sho what should I do? I'm leaning toward the 3700+ san diego bc of higher stock speeds and because of that 11x multi. It shouldn't take much to oc it to 4000+ or fx-55 speeds.

how much did you OC your 144, mine is currently at 2.43GHz 1:1, any higher was 3Dmark stable but only a few minutes prime stable even with more voltage so i backed down to 2.43 (270x9) with 1.4V, 4xHT and 1:1

Whats your current O/C on the 144? My 3700+ runs 2.8ghz, some 3700's top out around 2.7, but most seem to do 2.75-2.85, with a rare few hitting 2.9

Depending on which games you play, and the settings you play at, you're not going to notice any extra performance with a faster processor. You'll see a 50-80% increase in gaming performance with the addition of another GT, or you could see a 5% increase by swapping to an FX60.

I could only get mine to hit about 2.3ghz. I tried upping voltages and using dividers but I can't get it to go any higher than that. And for $30 more I think the 3700+ is a better processor and a better value.

Are you sure you're doing everything correctly? That's a very low overclock for a 144.

My 144 is at 2.615 at 2.45v with an hour stable on prime... luck of the draw I guess. Its a CAB2E. I'm still trying to find the limit. I think it'll top out between 2.7 and 2.8.

BTW, Im on the eVGA N41 (SLI Version)

That sounds like a very low overclock! What memory dividers have you tried? Did you set the memory speed to 133 mhz and then up the FSB to as high as it could go?
