hey all. My motherboard died yesterday somehow, so now i'm getting a new one along with a new CPU.

My old CPU is a T-Bird 1.4Ghz, running at stock speeds, that i got during the summer of 2001 and I'm trying to decide what CPU to get and i just can't decide. I have been reading alot of the theads here and it seems like the Barton 2500+ from newegg isn't a good deal compared to a XP 2100+ that is overclocked. Is this true? I could afford it if I wanted it, but it seems like there isn't much of an upgrade over a 2100+. Plus the 2100+ is cheaper by around 90 bucks. The 90 bucks I saved from the Barton could goto a sweet HSF and i'll probably have money leftover.

The motherboard i'm getting is a SOLTEK SL-75FRN2-L.

I've looked at the posts here and saw that most people were getting a cpu in the 2100+ just as good, performance wise, as the Barton 2500 by overclocking the 2100. Is it true or would I be better served paying a little more for the Barton in the long run?

I have never ocerclocked before, but i'm sure i could learn. I just want a stable and quiet computer.

Thanks for anybody that can help. I'd like to order the CPU sometime tomorrow morning, if not tonight. I just can't decied....

Thanks!

I got my XP1700+ TBred "B" for $65 bucks and is running at 2.2ghz right now. That seems like a good price to me. :) I think you can still get this little puppy HERE Well looks like it is $72 now.

hmm at newegg the XP1700+ TBred "B" is only 61. The 2100 tho is only 88 and is also a TBred "b" and you get an extra 400MHz right out of the box.

Hmm what are the average overclocking results for the 1700 vs the 2100? I would think you could overclock the 2100 more then the 1700, but i could be wrong....

You can actually OC the 1700+ more, just because it's the same core as the 2100+, running at a lower clock speed by default. If you get a really good 1700+, you could OC it to the same speed as many 2100+ could be OCed to. So actually the 1700+ would have been overlcoked more. Hope that made sense....

I think he meas that you get a higher overclock in relation to original clock speed.

yeah, sorry if i wasn't clear. I mean with the 2100 one would think you should be able to reach a higher GHz when compares to a 1700, just because you are starting by default at a high GHz. My thinking could always be off tho, I'm not the most knowledgeable here when it comes to overclocking.

hmm decisions decisions.... what should i get.. a 2100 or a 1700. Maybe 2100 because if i decide not to overclock i'll be better off with it over the 1700, plus i wouldn't be that far off from the Barton 2500..

My "refurb" 1700 from Newegg is a B and it runs at 2600+ speeds at default voltage.....pretty much any 1700 B will hit 2.1 ghz or more.....

I only paid $35.....;)

im happy i made that decision.

Do you have to manually unlock the multipliers on the 1700+'s from Newegg or do they come factory unlocked like my T-Bird?

hmm ok i've decided... I'm going to go with a XP 2100+ and if i decided against overclocking it'll be running at a good speed out of the box.

now to decided on a HSF... I'm thinking an SK-7 and some kind of fan that's quite. Anybody have a good fan reccomendation?

hehehe...

good choice.. but i would have gone with a 1700+

if 30 dollars more for 100-200 mhz is worth it for you, then go for it....

go with an slk800(a)(u) or the slk900

slk800(a) = 4 extra fins
slk800(u) = mounting holes so you can screw into mobo
slk900 = mother of all slk's... but pretty expensive...

www.svc.com or you can try www.kdcomputers.com

sorry i'm too lazy to linkify :)

Well I think you chose wisely 'cause I have the 2100+ too :p I'm using the

Vantec AeroFlow and it's less than 29$ shipped fedex 3day and my 2100+ is running@2.4ghz@51-52c under F@H GROMACS 100% load using it and it's pretty quite especially for 5600rpm because of the TMD fan design and it looks schweet!

A T-bred is a Palomino on the .13mu process. But it had problems going to higher clockspeeds, so AMD released a revised T-Bred named T-Bred B that had an extra ninth layer that increased clockspeeds
