Best AMD CPU for middle end gaming

Specifications:
CPU budget around $200
AMD athlon/semrpon/ i dunno, help me choose!
Don't plan on overclocking cause this'll be my first comp 😀

I was looking at amd athlon 64 3000+ but i don't know which to get, socket 939 or 754?

You should probably get a socket 939 because they aren't much more expensive than the socket 754's (maybe the same price now) and you can upgrade it later. Either the 3000 or the 3200 will be great choices. Probably the 3200 is best since you're not going to OC.

So, that depends on numerous things. Now your budget only includes a CPU? Or RAM and a motherboard too? Also, if you have an AGP video card, it might be better to upgrade to a motherboard with an AGP slot. Some things are missing here. Also, Bleh's suggestion of a 3200+ is a good one.

Every first timer here says their not overclocking🙂

But once you realize how easy it is, and that it poses no risk of damaging your components as long as you use some common sense. And you can get the performance of a $1000 chip out of a $150-$200 chip, you will be overclocking too.

whats wrong with 754? im upgrading but dont have the budget to go 939 - for $125 i can get a Sempron64 2800+ and a good motherboard. im still running socket A, baby! 😀

I think they meant socket 754 A64s, they're really not worth it anymore (AMD's price cuts have pretty much made socket 939 even priced with it. By the way, has anyone gotten a 754 DTR 4000+? it sounds very tasty--2.6GHz 1MB cache for like 390 bucks)

Was wondering about the 939 3200+ venice, what makes this one so good for the price. I notice a mess of people are using this one for OC. I'm looking to build one soon and well I'm on a budget. And my be interest in OC. I'm to big of risk taker.

If you are going to OC for sure then I'd go with the 3000+, since you save a bit of cash and it'll probably clock just as high as a 3200+.
