Best AMD 939 cost/performance chip non oc

Purchased a Compaq SR1710NX a while ago when they were on sale and would like to upgrade the cpu. It has a Sempron 3400 now and the board has no oc'ing abilities whatsoever. I don't really play games but I do a lot of video encoding and htpc stuff with FFDShow processing and the like. What is the best possible performace vs. cost ratio non oc chip I can get? Thanks.

Whatever the cheapest stepping Opteron 165 is.

Socket 754? Then go with the athlon 64 3400 if you can find it for around $125. Newegg sometimes has them in that price range (customer returns-open box). But you may only notice about a 20% improvement in overall performance. Don't expect too much for video encoding.

He specifically stated 939, not 754. Unless stated otherwise, which he didn't state.

Just built a gaming rig around a 3800 X2, and so far I have been very happy with the price/performance trade-off of that decision.

Also, I didnt think dual core would make much of a difference, but was I wrong...the minute you start multi-tasking on programs that would otherwise give you the endless hourglass...sweet.

Couldn't agree more. I've recently built myself a budget X2 3800+ rig and it works like a charm for my XviD encodings.

Exactly what I thought. With these chips, clock speeds > cache. The 165 is a 1.8GHz chip with 1MB/core while the x2 3800+ is a 2GHz chip with 512k/core. In "most" things the x2 will outperform the Opteron, IMO.

I posted a poll with this almost this exact question shortly after the holidays ...X2 4200+ vs Opty 170 & got the same response as here... X2 if not oc'ing is the way to go.

I had a S939 mobo from Compaq that turned out to be a K8N Neo2 Platinum. All it required was a BIOS flash and I was good to go. Maybe you could get lucky too?
