Best alternative to Comcast?

Comcast is really getting on my nerves, I have been complaining (so are 3-4 people in the neighborhood, according to the technician) but they cannot fix the internet so I get more than 40% uptime. I have lost hours of valuable work time over the last 3 weeks and its time for me to say enough. So, can anyone tell me how I can pick a good alternative? How can I be sure that I am within the optimum distance for DSL? Any good deals that I should be aware of?

I have already decided to cancel cable tv and sign up for Dish Network through SunDish. How are these guys?

SBC usually has the lowest price. I think with recent price drop it's down to $16/month.
 
Same thing is happening in my area. Comcast has about 5 hours of downtime a day in my area. They have not fixed it after 5 techs have been out and i have called them 24 times. This has been going on for over a month.
 
SBC is super cheap, but they lie about availability. I'm on it now, but their auto-zip-analyzer says I'm too far away.

Right, because I have 1.5Mbps down...
 
I went from Comcast to Verizon DSL because I was so pissed about the downtime. Speed dropped significantly from the switch, but it now works 24/7.
