Best all-in-one multifunction device?

MidiGuy

Anybody know what is the best all-in-one multifunction device for under $200 (if there even IS a good one)? I think the guy who wants an opinion may want to print photos, but I'm not sure. This may be a hard question, so I'll settle for Web sites with good reviews and preferably roundup type comparisons, so I can make my own choice.

Thanks!

The OfficeJet G55xi is a bit expensive, $275 (I bought mine for 475 three years ago), but it prints superb photos, in my opinion, but I'm not very discerning. It would be great if it had borderless printing, but I still love it. The scans are wonderful and it can print higher than 600 dpi. I did break mine rather easily when there was a paper jam and I was trying to pull it out the front, but that was because I forgot I could pull it out the back. The black cartridges are on the expensive side and the color cartridges are even more expensive, so if you do get the G55 make sure you get the high capacity cartridges.

What functions are we looking at?

Unless you want a combination laser print/digital copier/scanner, I'd suggest getting separate peripherals. The choice and quality will be much better, and you won't end up with a suboptimized product.

Canon's "100" model multifunction thing has the best printer unit, 1440x720 dpi with "single ink" technology (will say, the S400's print engine). The color scanner, at 360 dpi, is so-so, and FAXing is as good as it gets with 33600 bps and color faxing supported.

regards, Peter
