More important than the carrier is getting yourself on a 777. Eva Air, for example, sucks bad on their trans-Pacific 747s but is one of the best airlines I've been on when it comes to the 777. Ditto for United, and I was very happy with Asiana because that's all they put me on (from what I understand Asiana and Korean have basically the exact same service). Going to Seoul adds a good amount to your flight time, though, and their layovers can be a pain on top of that.

I flew with China Airline (like others said, it is Taiwain and NOT China) about 10 years ago to fly back home. It was decent, not great but not bad at all. I flew from Dallas to LA by American than transfered to China.

I don't see the big deal about how cute the flight attendants. Unless they would strip naked and do a lapdance, I think it is better for a traveler, especially a long distance one, to focus on the seat, how comfortable you feel, food/drink, and service on an airline.

I read that Korean does not allow Dell laptops on board? Has anyone had this problem ( I read this was because of the exploding battery issues ) For my price range I'm now down to Korean Air versus United (Korean is more but if the service is better I'd rather do that) plus it gets be in earlier.

Thanks for all the comments and help everyone!

Do 747s have the in flight entertainment option?

In my experience, you have more room in a 777 and the personal entertainment systems are programmed better. The 747s I've been on had one crappy TV that is shared by fifteen or so people.

China Airlines flies the last production Boeing 747-400 on their LAX-TPE route. I've personally flown on that plane and even economy has on demand entertainment, movies, music and games etc. If you can't get Cathay or Singapore, I'd go with an American carrier because no matter how bad it is, it can't be worse than China's airlines.

I've flown with them three times and all three times, my flight's been delayed/cancelled. The first hour they'd tell the pasengers that the flight is delayed because the plane hasn't arrived yet. The next hour, they'd tell us that there was an engine malfunction they're working on repairing, and finally, in the third hour, they'd say the flight's been cancelled and merge us with another flight. I have no problem with airlines cancelling flights due to underbooking but don't jerk around your customers till the last minute to see if you have enough people to justify flying that flight. And don't make some lame ass excuse to delay the flight. This was China Eastern, btw. At least with an American carrier you can communicate with the flight attendants, never flown an american carrier to China but it can't possibly be worse than China's airlines.

How would you say Korean air stacks up? My choice is between United for 837 USD but it has horrible seats for a tall guy like me and leaves at a not so good time or 1,400 dollar NWA, Korean Air, or all Nippon Airways with Korean having the best time and seats. I'm not paying the ticket so the 700 USD difference isnt that big of deal but i cant really go about 1.5k. Have you ever flown Korean?

very true. China Airlines was once a government institution, and as all government ran businesses, it sucked. After being privitized, it is getting better. Eva is awesome, one of the few major carriers that have a perfect safety record, and space their seats really far apart in economy, and their business class is on par with first class on most other airlines.

As for ladies, China Airline Girls >> Eva girls because of the ugly green uniforms Eva girls have to wear compared to the nice short light purple cherry-blossom themed uniforms of China Airlines.

anthro, sorry but I don't have any personal experience with Korean Air. I have had a lot of Korean friends and all they flew was Korean, take it for what its worth.

Singapore Airlines has a great reputation, not just for the luxury of it all but accident-wise, it's history is clean. See if they go there.
