Im looking for a $200-250(cnd) agp x8 card for my current p4 2.4 w/ht northwood, p4p800-vm mb, 512 ram, 400watt with plenty of 12v amps to power any agp card, system. I want to have decent gaming power before I build my next comp. What video card would be best for my system and one that won't make my comp cpu limited?

thanks

I recommend cutting that budget by about $30 (US) or so and getting another 512mb of ram. Even with a high end video card a lot of games will still be choppy on only 512mb. The AGP 6800GS is a good value that has a decent chance of unlocking to 16 pipes. You should probably just pick something up in the FS/T forum though, cause retail prices on AGP cards are pretty much crap. What's your current card?

I got PNY 6800GS for $179 and it unlocked to 16 pipes. Haven't OC'd it yet, though. I would also suggest another 512/1 GB Ram. That may help more than a vidcard upgrade. You could probably get both the 6800GS and Memory for $250.

either the 6800 GS or the 7800 GS IMO...not the 6800 GT or Ultra though, since the 6800 GS easily beats the 6800 GT when both are at stock.

7800gs is the best AGP card at the moment, and it supports features the X850XT doesn't, like SM3.0 and HDR.

It's a little pricier though, about $300ish.

It might be better though to get the 6800GS like someone suggested, unlocking the pipes and getting more RAM.

yea, i looked throught ncix and i couldn't really find any agp cards, just a few. those 2 cards u pointed out seem like the best bang for the buck, i will probably pick up the 6800 gs with another 512mb of ram

I picked up an eVGA 6800GS CO Superclocked edition locally in Calgary (Canada) for $279CDN. Expensive yes, but with the Superclocked edition I am guaranteed Ultra speeds (400/1100) and I was able to unlock the extra 4 pixel pipelines (extra vertex shader unit causes artifacts). So I more or less have 6800 Ultra performance.

The 7900GS is something like $360 stock to $390CDN for the Superclocked which is just too much when the eVGA 7900GT CO Superclocked is $430.

Probably the best thing is to find a used 6800GT/Ultra or X850 (if you don't care about SM 3.0) but it's hard to find them priced fairly especially in Canada. Plus I didn't want to deal with the risk on a used card (e.g. previous owner burning from OC).
