New guy here. Hi.

I have an AGP motherboard, and my videocard just died. I've been out of the computer scene for about two years now and have no idea what's the good card to buy.

I play lots of games. Doom3, Quake4, FEAR, etc. Budget is $200. Must be an AGP CARD.

Please suggest. Thanks.

head to the for sale/for trade part of the forum for better deals. basically aim for a 6800gs/gt or x800xl in agp. those are usually around $200. a regular 6800 that can softmod can also be had for around $150.

Yeah buying one from someone is best. Alot of times, although not always, older parts are more expensive than some newer ones.

Thanks for the replies! I appreciate your time.

I am very cautious when it comes to used hardware; been burned before. :( I have overclocked (and destroyed) my videocards too...so I'm cautious about buying someone else's used card.

The card in question (that died) is a 9800 (not Pro). So, that's what I'm used to. I have seen a 9800 Pro, 128MB memory, 256-bit mem interface, for $120. That's my "benchmark." Can I do better for under $200?

yeah, no sweat...sides, the 9800pro can be found used on the forums for less than $100...i just sold my friend's 9800pro for $85 shipped. if you're gonna buy used, just make sure the person you're buying it from has some credibility. anything above a 6600gt/x700pro should be better than your 9800pro. also since newer cards have a temperature monitor...it should help to prevent you from destroying the card ;)

Honestly, if you're looking for a cheap video card that is AGP, I think you would be much better off going for a new 6600gt or 6800 series (sometimes you can find a really good sale on newegg.com) or get a used one. An X800xt would be your best bet, but good luck finding one that's AGP for a cheap price like you're wanting. It's just not worth getting a 9800 pro for the price, when you can get twice the performance, so you won't have to upgrade again nearly as soon, for not too much more. A new 6600gt though would be your best bet I think, or maybe a 6800gt. You can find a 6600gt for around $110 new after rebates sometimes without rebates even and a 6800gt for around $200 maybe cheaper. Check out newegg.com
