Hey guys, I have an old system: barton 2500+, 1GB, Ti4200... I'm thinking to update my video card but not the whole system. Since there's no pci-e bus, can you guys recommend a decent AGP video card that can play Doom3 at a decent resolution? Thanks.

oh, the price range i'm looking at is below 150 bucks.

Thank you. I used to be a hardcore, but didn't really follow the trend nowadays. How much is that 6600GT and what's the best place to get it from?

Also, if you guys could point me to a link that compares the performance of all vid cards (benchmark chart), i'd be greatly appreciate it.

I have an AGP 8x 6800GT from PNY Verto, and it runs BF2 at 1600 x 1200, all settings on high, at around 40-45 fps. Not bad.

I got a 6800 nu for an amd xp system and it was great :) Could play everything with aa/af, at the highest resolutions. Have upgraded that system and the video card, so I'm currently trying to sell it for $145 shipped. Check out my sig if interested :)

The 6800LE's on for around $130 are good, too. There's a chance you'll get one that's un-lockable to 6800nu speeds or greater.

then what is 6800NU? couldn't find it at Newegg's website.

Based on my personal experience, seems to me most vid cards are very reliable. For the leadtek card, it appears to have a heavy duty heatsink. How much change do I have to unlock another 4 pipe?

6800nu mean just the 6800 (non-ultra) or plain 6800 128mb. To unlock the other pipes you need to download Rivatuner. Then follow the readme.

Is every 6800nu flashable/modable? Or you guys have some favorate brand like Leadtck? :)

And I also noticed that 6600GTs have a faster core and bandwidth (500/1000?). How are these comared to 6800nu before and after oc?

many thanks!

I don't have any experience with the 6600's. Not every 6800 is softmoddable. It's a toss up. I like the BFG's personally.

If Doom3 is your thing (and you're also looking at the sub-$200 market), then the GeForce 6 series is the way to go. They perform much better on average in D3 than a comparable ATI card (eg a 6600GT smokes an X800GT, and a 6800GT beats the X800 Pro and XL).

I'd say that you should try to stretch your budget to accomodate a 6800GT. It's a terrific card and performs much better than the 6600GT in all games. Search the FS/FT forums.

If you really want to get a cheap card, a 6600GT will play Doom3 well. It will just cough and wheeze in some other games at high settings (eg Far Cry). A 6800GT is still a great card by today's standards.

those new X800GTO2 AGP model should be a very good deal if they mod like their PCI-E counterparts.

Thank you! Basically I don't play game now, but I would like to have a card that's capable for today's new games. Maybe I'll pick up some games in the next couple of months. I still miss the days whe I was having fun on Q3A. Used to be a decent player. :)

For work purpose, I'd need a card that does extremely well for 2-D, for some CAD work. Dunno which card is good for that perspective.

How good is the Leadtck card in term of mod? I mean how much chance I can unlock the extra 4 pipes and OC it a bit? It seems to have a real good heatsink. I'm kinda tempting...

Yeah, the 6800GT is the best choice, it's the king in terms of price/performance, followed by the ATI X800XL. The absolutely fastest AGP card is the X850XT PE (since Nvidia has no 7-series AGP card), but the 6800GT is no slouch and has 16 pipelines just like the X850XT PE.

i got the x800 xt pe from ati... its great only paid 200. If you can get that gto you can flash it and oc to x850 xt pe or something like that. X800 xt pe beats any 6xxx series card except in doom.

Get a 6800nu. These cards are fairly cheap now ($165), and you have a great chance( >75%) of modding from 12p/5VS to 16p/6vs with Riva Tuner. my BFG 6800oc after Softmodding to 16p/6vs and with moderate OC (375/750) scores a 4555 in 3Dmark05 which is close to stock 6800GT performance. Even if you dodn't softmod and OC the card it will outferform the 6600GT's out of the box.
