I'm looking to upgrade from my socket A, but would like to utilize my DDR RAM and AGP card a bit longer. What is my best option at this point (cpu and motherboard)?

I like the 939 cpus at newegg. Last time I checked, they had the opteron 165 retail boxed for $105. PcGear has the asrock dual sata II 939 board for $68 plus shipping. I like this board so much that I ordered a spare last week. I have a 3200 939 cpu overclocked to 2400 on the asrock board, which has a true agp and pci-e slot and 4 ddram slots. Check newegg for the latest 939 inventory, which may have changed since I last checked.

the asrock 4coredual-vsta and core2duo e4300 or e4400 is a pretty popular combination right now.

it has agp/pci-e, ddr/ddr2, and pata/sata support. you can probably reuse almost everything else in your current system.

i just upgraded to it from a socket a system and didn't even have to upgrade from my 350W antec power supply. of course, your mileage may vary ;)

Is this system going to outperform an Asus A78NX-E Deluxe and a Barton 2500+?

What's better at this point for what I'm trying to do? Intel or AMD? I've always been an AMD person, but I'm thinking about giving Intel a try with this transition system.

Fry's has been having deals on e4300+ECS mobo. For $119, swapped out the wife's Athlon XP 3000+ and it's SO much faster, even with the same video card (6800nu AGP). Great deal if you're not overclocking.
