Best AGP Card Out There?

I am currently running a XFX Geforce 6800 (128mb) AGP card.

I've been tossing around the idea of upgrading my video card, but do not want to buy a new mobo and cpu. As i understand it, AGP is all but dead... but there seem to be a few new models popping up here and there.

Is the Geforce 7800GS still the top of the line, in terms of AGP? I am not familiar with the ATI cards at all, so I don't know if there is something offered from them that might be worth the $$$$. The 7800GS runs $275 - $300 on newegg... would my money be better saved for a nwe mobo/cpu/pci-e setup or would the $300 be well spent?

Thanks for any help/advice/info you can provide.

The 7800gs is the fastest agp card. ATI only has the x1600xt which is much slower. Gainward has a more expensive model - 20/24 pipe 7800gs.

If you are upgrading an Athlon XP pc and want to spend as little as possible, the 7800gs is the way to go. But if you have a socket 939 cpu, get the $150 7600gt and $60 pci mb and its about as fast as the agp 7800gs but $60 cheaper.

For ~$250 you can buy a pci-e 7900gt or a x1800xt that would be much faster than a 7800gs on agp. Ati also has the agp x850xt cards from last generation - those are about as fast as a 7800gs, but are also relatively expensive. Basically the top of the line AGP card would perform about the same as a 7600gt, which is $150 pci-e card.

but wait...

By the time you buy a GS.... you could have seen that it is more expencive and could have gone the whole hog with a better CPU..
if you still aint interested then the GS is the fastest card available.

I don't see the step up from a 6800 to a 7800GS as being significant enough for the money it would cost.
