My bro's comp is a Compaq Presario and only supports AGP 4X. I was wondering what card I should get that would be good at 4X. I was thinking Radeon 9600 pro but that's an 8X card.

I tried my GF2 MX400 card and it didn't like it any better than the GF 32MB version that's already in it.

So I guess getting an 8X card would be better since it would work with future upgrades

By the time you upgrade again, youll have a hard time finding an AGP graphix card.

What's the speed of the Compaq, and what's your budget? What screen resolution do you want to run at?

A 6600GT, 9800 Pro, 9600 XT / Pro, used gf4 ti 4200 are all good values for the money.

Current cards aren't really bandwidth-limited by AGP 4x (unless maybe you go into 6800GT territory), and they both use the same signaling voltage (8x was designed to be backwards compatible with 4x), so you're free to choose what you want, really.

Instead of a 9600 Pro, consider a used 9700 Pro if you're looking to spend $130 or less. If you can spend $200 and the CPU won't cripple it, a 6600GT will be even better.

It's a P4 with 1.8 gigs and 768 megs of PC133 Ram. Plan on playing at 1024x768 and above.

yikes. I don't know that you'll be playing any games at 1024x768 with that setup.

Are you kidding? There are plenty of games he can play with that rig.
Not all games are Far Cry/Doom3 intensive.

A GeForce4 4600 is a nice AGP 4x card, that would serve him well.

I run my 9700 pro at 4X and I'm CPU/RAM limited in the newer games. The 4X is plenty for the VC.
