Someone has to say it, Opteron. Look under the price guide for OSA146DAA5BN at http://www.flickerdown.com/. A $126 cpu that should do 2.8+ GHz is bang for buck. Good luck if you can get a hold of that guy though.....

I would have to say a 3200+ Venice. Decent speed in non-overclocked rig and most likely capable of 2.4-2.5 with decent cooling.

I would say Opteron 144 (143 $ instock at Mwave)
Close 2nd would be a 3700+ on sale at Small Business Dell for $184.02 + tax (sale ends 12/21)

Sometimes i wish i was a budget driven person, then i could really appreciate the purpose and gain from OCing (mainly the money saved). I mean you can really get a good spec system (if OCing) and save so much money and have something that really compares to a high budget system.

In this circumstance, an opty 144 @ $143.00 (from Zebo's link), is capable on the most part of reaching AMD FX57 speeds aka 2.8Ghz with the stock heatsink and fan. The FX57 costs $1,011.00, your saving yourself $868 :shocked:

This processor is for you ;)

What's so hard about finding the opt 165's? Monarch has them in stock and they shipped mine in one day.

Yea but i paid $295 only a month ago from same site:)

Best deal on dual core probably though..

Although mwave also has the 3800+ for $323 and you get a free 128MB MP3 player with combo.. various motherboard prices in the combo is almost wholesale too.

well they are available, and if they clock as high as the 3800's and are the same price, the extra bit of cache (hehe) makes them the best explosion for your legal tender. BTW, Monarch had them up to 350 a week ago but they are only 315 now.

dual core - opteron 165 or higher
single core - venice 3000+/3200+
dual core if opteron is not available - X2 3800+

The 3800 X2 or the Opteron 165

If you're oc'ing, your MB can handle high HTT(FSB), and you don't mind fan noise => 165

If not => X2 3800
