Best 92mm fan for Ultima 90

Hi Everyone,

I'm buying a Thermalright Ultima 90 for my Q6600 B3 chip, and I'm wondering what would be the best 92mm fan to accompany it?

As usual, I'm looking for high CFM and low noise. I would get a 120mm fan, but I fear that it won't fit inside my Coolermaster Wavemaster case.

I've heard good things about the 92mm Panaflos. Can anyone suggest something better?

Does anyone have experience with the Scythe "KAZE-JYU" 100mm Silent 100mm Fan which has 92mm mounting holes?

I'm also wondering, since this fan is for the CPU, should I go for a PWM fan that I can plug into the 4-pin motherboard header?

Thanks for your help!

very quiet fan with great static pressure.

You need a fan controller or you need to put this on your cpu mobo header and then control it via speedfan or any other fan controling software. On Max its Loud, on Min it wont give you great overclocking. The middle has a nice sweet spot, but you can only get to that if you control the setting.

LMAO!

Well if you dont care about noise....

The vantec Tornado's would be my choice. But you shouldnt be "overclocking limited" because you went with a quiet zalman vs a loud full screaming panflo.

Dude offtopic... but its been a very long time since i heard/last used fans which were 100CFM+ raited. Ahhh the wonders of water. :D

I haven't used a fan that was rated 100CFM+ for years either, Ahhh the woders of adequate heatsink design. On a side note, ah heck off, I'm using 80cfm fans. ;)

I'm using an Ultra-90 heatsink, very similar. I was using a 92mm panaflo, but the noise at low voltage was bothering me. I just got some 92mm Arctic Cooling fans, they are running at about 830 rpm connected to the motherboard. Very quiet at 40% duty cycle.
I got the arctic fans here.

You can also get the 38mm thick Arctic pwm fans from jab-tech and performance pcs, they might be even quieter.

I am looking into building a pwm controller to control my front fan also. Pwm fans are the future, I'm convinced.

Is the noise difference really that big? The high speed Panaflo 92 is rated for 1 dbA lower than the Zalman. Do the Panaflos just not undervolt as well?

marincounty: I was stuck on the issue of PWM versus non-PWM for a while, and I finally went the traditional 3-pin way, because there were so few PWM options and even fewer reviews of the PWM fans. I'm glad to hear that the Arctic PWM worked so well for you.

So far I've found zalmans to be pretty accurate with their ratings but, a lot of manufacturers under rate their sound and over rate their CFM. There are just so many variables to measuring the performance of fans it's nearly impossible to expect manufacurers listing to be 100% accurate. You should check out the big fan review over at XS forums, I think it's in the water cooling section. Some great info in there.

Yeah, I saw both Cathar's and Vapor's Xtreme Systems fan reviews, and I found them incredibly helpful when I was looking for a 120mm fan. Do you know of any reviews/roundups that give similar treatment to 92mm fans?

Also, is there normally a large wait time before an XS member can post on the forum? I registered and activated my account last week, but apparently I can't post until I'm pulled off the "moderation queue". I'd like to talk fans with some of the fan review masters themselves :).

took them almost two weeks for me. A lof of them are going to say that they only know about the fans they tested and it's too true anymore. There are some brands that one can generally say are going to be good but, it's still a chance there is going to be hit-or-miss with a lot of them.
