Hi,

Im buying a new hard-drive. Im looking at a IBM GX125 60 gig hard-drive, a Seagate Barracida IV 60 Gig and a Maxtor Diamond Max 60 gig.....all 7200 RPMS, all ATA-100 except the Maxtor, its ATA-133. Right now I have the Seagate Barracida picked out....What do you think? And is upgrading from a 5400 to 7200 RPM worth it?

Well, this is my first message here, sorry about the poor english...
I'm going to buy an Maxtor D740X-6L. It's an 7200rpm Hard Disk, and it's very fast and quiet. I've heard some friends talking about it and they say it's the best choice today.

How about the Western Digital 7200 SE drives with 8MB Cache?

As most would probably agree with right now, I would stay away from IBM drives until they get their problems straightened out. The Seagate drive will be fast and virtually quiet, but not the fastest drive out on the market although failure rate is low.
The Maxtor is a very fast drive and the only to feature ata133. It is a great drive but not as quiet as the Seagate and failure rate is in between the Seagate and IBM.
Western Digital has a very nice ata 100 drive with an 8meg cache so it's quick in loading and transferring is good. The WD drives have a better track record in the past couple of years.

It really depends on what is important to you? Speed? Noise? Brand? I would go with what some people you know have and like or go with one that gives what you want it to do.

gf420, best in exactly what category(i.e. best in noiselessness, best in raid, best in performance, best in random seek times, etc)?

Case reopened. :)

fah...overall performance...

i don't see how you can make a case for any other 7200RPM HD as better overall for the gamer/techie than the WD...retail PSU fans drown out all HD noise...most people don't use RAID...

the benchmarks are there if you want to dispute it but I don't see what you're even disputing...you're "re-opening the case" without presenting any new evidence...

going from a 5400 rpm drive to 7200 you'll notice slight differences in performance however they will be small. again this really depends on what you do.

from experience, maxtor drives work great. i've had built 20+ computers with maxtor drives and all have been working fine EXCEPT the maxtor drive on my very first computer, an 8 gig maxtor crapped out on me. it came with a quantum (remember them?) computer. other than that i have had positive experience with maxtor.

hope that helps

"i don't see how you can make a case for any other 7200RPM HD as better overall for the gamer/techie"

Who said the original poster was either of these? The SE drives are the best performing, but that doesn't make them the best drive for everyone "case closed." What if you want the quietest? What if you are on a budget? What if you have no need for 80GB of space? There are a number of people who the SE drive would not be the best option for.

Just out of curiousity, last time I was in the market for a hard drive (granted, it was 3 years ago) everyone said western digitals crapped out after only a couple of years...were they bullshit or has WD improved? (As I"m thinking of buying an mp3/movie hard drive right now)

*sigh*...i suppose you're right that I implied things but what's a guy to do when a person asks such a vague question...

I'd go with the Maxtor (liquid bearing). The 8mb WD drive is a bit too expensive for my taste.

I love the 120GXP and 60GXP IBM's. I've yet to have a problem with the 30 that I've sold, contrary to what many others have experienced. Probably the problem people have had is because they weren't properly cooled. All of mine were sold with an Enermax UC-002F9S hard drive fan, so they never get hot, and most of them are running 24x7. (NewEgg has the fan for $6 before shipping, search for Enermax, one of the cheapest items there.) I put 4x 120GB WD "Special Edition" 8MB cache drives in a RAID 5 array with an Adaptec 2400A. I was most impressed with them. They cost a little more than the IBM 120GXP but in some applications they just plain ROCK because of the cache! I don't sell anything less than 7200rpm, 2MB cache drives anymore. Just isn't worth it.

Yeah im gonna stay away from the IBM's because they just seem to have a rep around here to suck ass and fail. Case closed. And Im a University Student, so budget is key, looking for best performance/stabilty for the buck. I personally like the Seagate....need a little more help...what do you dudes think of Samsung HD's
