best 60" plasma for 1000-1500

Since AVS forums doesnt seem to be what it once was ill ask this here as well.

Im looking for a new TV, have decided on plasma for this one.

Looking in the 50-60" range in size and 1000-1500 in price.

AVS has suggested the panny ST50 and the LG PA6550.

Whats AT's suggestions.

I just went through this a couple years ago so my info is definitely dated but here's what I came up with for the big players... being samsung, panasonic, and LG. The sammys were on top for everything but they were known for having a little buzz. I bought a sammy and yes it does buzz a little. when a movie is on or whatever no way you'll ever hear it. The panasonics were said to lose their nice black blacks over time but great picture otherwise. The LG's weren't really in the same league picture wise (if you really wanted to split hairs) but you got a great picture and a big TV for a great price. Personally I don't think you could go wrong with any of those brands but read reviews for any model you're considering. The only thing I would suggest is making sure where ever you buy it they have atleast an exchange policy. In the stores they have messed up settings, showing pictures that will show them off so you'll look at one and think how vivid the colors are and buy it. It will probably look a lot different when you get it home and put the game on.

Just my 2cents.

I've got a Panny ST30 55" and I love it. I've had for around six months and could't be happier with it. With that generation it was by far the best deal for the money with the best picture. Got for $900 just before the new models came out.

not sure what you mean about AVS, but personally i've been using them for a lot of research recently and am most likely going to get the ST50 due to it's praise as well as it's minimal input lag for gaming.

not sure what you mean about AVS

I assume OP meant avsforum.com. A great place to go for a serious case of analysis paralysis (many of the threads on specific pieces of equipment run well over 500 pages). But still a very good source of information.

yea i figured he meant the forums over there, but i don't know what he means about it not being what it used to be.

I just picked up 60PA6500 for 899 at hhgregg locally and it has a very nice picture and brightness level for what I need.

Not dated. Just Plain inaccurate. Samsung has never been on top. It's always been Panasonic.
The st50 is as good as last year's vt30. Go Panasonic.

And I'm not sure what the op means by avs not being what it once was.

And about AVS its turning into a trollfest, not so much the video side of it but the audio forums have been getting alot worse lately.

I'd definitely go with 60" over 50" then. You could go even bigger than that, but it would probably blow your budget unless you went with a rptv.

I sit 10' from a 50". It's nice, but not very immersive. I bought the TV several years ago for $1,900. At the time a similar 60" TV was $3,900 😱. At today's prices and a budget over $1,000, I'd definitely go with at least 60".

This thread interests me, because I've often thought about upgrading to a 60-65" plasma.

I just got the same one should be here on Wendnesday... just have to deside on glasses. Samsung SSG-4100's or the Panisonics.

I just got the 60" version last week. If you are looking at 3D glasses, the Samsung 4100GB glasses are compatible with the ST50, and only costs $20 or less. Just as good, and some ways better, than the Panasonic glasses.

Thanks for the input on the glasses. I'll get 2 pair from BestBuy to try out the 3D and if we want others down the road I'll look into the Panisonics for my wife and me. BestBuy matched Amazons price the day I bought the TV and gave me free delvery and set up so I bit.
The 30 day return and AMX one year warranty sold me on the deal.

Thanks for the info on glasses.

Will be next week when it arrives now, ran into some "issues" with my order, lets just say there is a reason i still prefer to pay cash for everything and this experience has done nothing but reinforce that feeling.

I see OP already made a decision. Oh well. Hopefully someone can benefit from this information. ^^

As much as I prefer doing business with e-tailers (and usually believe electronics shouldn't be bought used), Sear's outlet can have some nice deals for refurbished or "slightly damaged" TVs. I recently found a very good deal on a 50" GT30 for $800 that had a few scratches on the bezel that weren't even noticeable or front-facing.

If you're looking to save a ton of money - don't mind spending a little more time finding a good deal - refurbished or slightly damaged is awesome. I recommend checking some Sears' near you. You'll likely need to actually call them to get accurate inventory information though.
