I'm looking for a nice 5.1 home theater system to go with the new Samsung 56" DLP TV I'll be getting. It will be in my finished basement. Good bass response is important to me. What would you guys recommend as a 5.1 system for under $800?

I plan on buying a DVD/HD DVD/BlueRay player separatly at a later day so that need not be included in the cost of the HT system.

BTW, I have this system already (upstairs) and I am happy with the performance.

Thanks!

edit to fix the 'ass' typo. :)

A good place to start is with a refurbed Onkyo home theater in a box (direct from them, check their website). You can often times get a nice starter setup with enough money left over to invest in a much better sub or front speakers. Those would be the two things I would upgrade first, as for which one first, it depends on what your use is (if music will be played then the front speakers, if games and/or movies then the sub). Then probably the center, followed by the surrounds. Then maybe the reciever. Then start the cycle over again or, at any step along the way, be happy with what you've got and stop there.

I agree with going used/refurb if possible and about the point of leaving yourself an upgrade path if possible.

If you need everything right away, getting a HTIB set and replacing the sub might be the way to go if "ass" = bass ;)

I was going to recommend the 7.1 option from Onkyo and spend the extra on a nice sub/and or some nice floorstanders for the front and use the big ones as surrounds and sell the sub for ~85$

I have some X-LS for my office system and I liked them a lot trying them out for HT for the price, but I don't think that's going to happen on this budget for a full system.

If getting just a pair of speakers and a sub is a possibility though, I think that would be a very good way to go. There are a lot of AV123 products coming up to that would help to give a lot of upgrade options.
