Hopefully I can gain some insight here. What should I look for when I start shopping? Are there a handful of models to focus on?

A 42 foot TV is gonna be pretty pricey :)

Seriously tho, I'd start by looking at cNet. They organize their site really well and they are probably a good place to start at least getting ideas about what models are worth considering.

Top Choices to me (All use the same Samsung Panels):
Toshiba 40XF550 from Costco is 999 for 120Hz 40"
Samsung 40A550 from Amazon fluxuates usually between 1000-1100 with random deals dipping lower.
Sony 40V4100 - Tends to be a bit on the expensive side.

Honorable Mention
Vizio (not sure what their current 42" model # is)

Just make sure whatever you do you get a current year model. Buying last years model will almost always be a poor price/performance choice.

Thanks, the Toshiba seems like a good choice. Backlight control seems to be a very celebrated feature, i guess the older models don't have this?

Are the 800$-850$ models even worth looking at?

I'm tempted to buy this: Text

bad idea?

Link doesn't work so I cant tell what you are tempted by, however Sceptre is 100% trash. AOC I have no experience with but I wouldn't pick them over a real brand. The 850 dollar Vizio is a good bargain and the 800 dollar Sharp is a mad bargain at the moment.

For 800 that Sharp is a steal, for 1000 that Toshiba should offer a good improvement.

*edit* Wow there's a 46" Sharp at Costco for 1K. If you can fit it, that is quite the buy.

Westinghouse has some cheap 42" 1080p models, but they're not that impressive. For the average consumer though, they're not half bad!!
