best 3D workstation gfx card for under £300 ??

Greetings to all at anandtech... I am honoured to post my first message on this most superb forum!
Can anyone recommend the best card that money can buy for around £300???
I am about to buy a Connect3D RADEON? 9700 PRO + VGA DVI-I & Tv-out- AGP 8x for £265
Is there any difference between different Manufacturers of radeons?
Should I look for a more pro card like the nvidia Quadro series?
I work mostly with 3d studio max 5

 
You look at the Nvidia Quatro Line of cards? They were easily the best bang for the buck a little while ago, and seems that their new generation continues the tradition.
 
From what I've heard its possible to modify a ATi 9500 128mb (non-pro) card into ATi's professional series via a software modification - much like whats used to mod a the above card to the 9700 series.
