I want to buy a 26" LCD HDTV.

What criteria should I use to evaluate the choices? I have seen models from Sony, Panasonic, Samsung and Gateway. The vary in price by almost $1000. But, let's face it, it is difficult to compare the products in an electronics store.

Are there numeric specifications that would help me narrow my choice? Or is it a purely a matter of subjective viewing preferences.

I will be using the TV with a HD cable signal.
