Best 24" for 1920x1200? (IPS or PVA/MVA) Upgrade Dell 2405 FPW?

So... I've purchased a Planar SA2311W which is a 120 Hz 3D monitor.

The 120 Hz is almost life-changing but I hate the 23" 16x9 aspect ratio and while the 3D looks breathtaking, I'm not sure I could wear glasses every single time I want to play a game.

However, the Planar SA2311 is a TN panel and next to my Dell 2405 FPW (IPS)... it looks MUCH better?!?

The Dell 2405 FPW is over six years old at this point so I'm guessing that it's pretty outdated.

Anyways - what would be a significant upgrade from my Dell?

I'd like the following:

* 24" (true 24" and not 23" or 23.6")
* 1920x1200
* Normal RGB (not the "wide color" that some monitors offer; I tried one and it was awful)
* Significant upgrade from the Dell 2405 FPW
* HDMI input
* Decent for gaming (under 30ms input lag since that's what my Dell 2405 has and I don't notice it too much)
* Will be used "mostly" for gaming but I'm not a hardcore gamer what-so-ever

Thanks for any suggestions... I'm not sure if I will keep the Planar SA2311W but I'm just looking for other options, etc.

Dell Ultrasharp U2410 is a great IPS display.

Good for gaming and very crisp,clear colors for everything else.

Doesn't the U2410 have wide gamut?

I love my 23" Dell. I downgraded from a U2710 and don't miss it at all. Its normal gamut and almost perfect out of the box. The U2410 is going to need to be calibrated out of the box.

Its 16:9 though. I'll be honest, I've gotten used to it.

The U2410 is a great monitor, but yeah, it is wide gamut. I did not have to calibrate my U2410s to use them. All you need is a simple understanding of what the different settings on your monitor do.

Dell just came out with the U2412M which has an IPS panel but is not wide gamut, and it is LED backlit, for ~$100 cheaper than the U2410. Great choice to look at. Huge thread over at HardForum on it, as is typical over there.

The other choices in IPS are generally the HP monitors that are the direct competitors of the Dells. The LP2475w and the ZR24w.

I really don't do any color work so everything I do is "normal gamut" (sRGB?)

However, I do really like Dell monitors so I'm interested in checking out the Dell U2410 since I've heard a lot of good things about it and it has a lot of connectivity options.

However, how does it's sRGB emulation look? The last time I tried a wide gamut monitor it was the Dell 2408 and it looked awful compared to my old Dell 2405 and I had to return it because I just didn't like it...

I've had dual 2408s on my desk here at home for like two years, and I had dual 2410s at work for over a year. I don't remember what mode I had set on the 2410s (I don't work there anymore), but the picture and color on them was even better than my 2408s. I ran through the same setup as outlined in that post I linked above in this thread. Spectacular monitors. And I don't do anything that needs wide gamut.

I am of the same opinion you are regarding Dell monitors. I tried to replace my 2407WFP with a 2408WFP and was not pleased. I ended up buying a refurbed EIZO 24" that time, and recently when I wanted to go bigger I got a refurbed NEC PA271W. Both times the refurbs were in brand new condition and came with a factory warranty.

Just throwing this out there as an idea:

http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop-monitors/lcd2490wuxi2-bk-r

I used to be a Dell fan too (still have a a 2005FPW), but a refurbed high end screen from EIZO or NEC is better than a Dell these days IMO.

AT forums is definitely my main forum, but [H] tends to have better monitor threads. There is a huge U2410 thread over there that should probably help you decide.

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1441159&highlight=u2410

From what I can tell from skimming that thread is that the consensus is the same for the U2410 as most previous Dell "UltraSharp/U" screens: If you're lucky enough to get a good one you'll get a decent screen, if not, you won't.

You may want to take a look at the newly released Dell U2412M, also an 1920x1200 eIPS (Dell 2209WA was also eIPS). It is not fully wide gamut as the U2410 - no AdobeRGB color gamut - hence not quite as high end. But it is an LED, has a much better lower brightness range (finally!), much lower power consumption, weighs a lot less, and is selling for a good deal less even at full price, $399. See http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...329A0A01A0A640. First review I've found, other than buyers at the Dell site, is http://www.flatpanelshd.com/review.php?subaction=showfull&id=1312883832. I think TFT Central has one coming soon.
