I just bought a set of Klipsch promedia 2.1's for $133 US. Overstock.com has them for ~$100 so thats like, what, 55-60 quid? If you want a little cheaper the Logitech Z-2300's are another great offering.
If you want to go even cheaper (sub $100 US) then the JBL Creature 2's get good reviews even though they are butt-ugly. Also the logitech Z-3's are decent and around $50 US. Not sure about the other styles, these are just the ones I recently compared before making my decision
To my ears, the logitechs tend to have more powerful bass while the klipsh have a more true reproduction of the music (much better highs).
Here is a thread I have in peripherals detailing my search for a decent 2.1 system. Check it out if you want more info.

These? This is the only set of Klipsch speakers Ive been able to find in the UK. My eternal search for their 5.1's continues.

Man, after doing some searching it does look like the Klipsch are hard to find in the UK. Strange, you english must not have enough computer nerds to make it worth it
