Best 1920x1200 LCD WUXGA monitor? Sony, Samsung, HP, Apple?

I've been looking for reviews on the 1920x1200 WUXGA LCD monitors, but haven't found much. Most LCD reviews are for the small 19" monitors. Would anyone know which is the "best" one? I currently have the Samsung SyncMaster 213T and it's great for programming, but it's a bit small for widescreen movies and I see ghosting on games w/ the 25ms response.

Sony's new 23" PremierPro SDM-P234/B monitor looks pretty cool and so do the specs - 16ms response, $2000.

Samsung's 24" SyncMaster 243T is an inch bigger, but is slower w/ 25ms response, $2200.

HP's 23" f2304 HDTV-ready supports DVI, Component Video, and S-Video with 16ms response and integrated speakers, $2100.

Apple's 30" Cinema Display looks gorgeous and has 16ms response, $3300.

I have no need for speakers and 16ms is nice, so I'd go with the Sony over the HP. But the Samsung is an inch bigger... If the Apple could work with DVI from an NVidia 6800 Ultra, I'd like to get that one. But can DVI go up to 2560x1600?

[EDIT]
I just found the "Corporate" version of HP's monitor:

HP's 23" L2335, 16ms response, 500:1 contrast, and the lowest priced at $1600.

I am a bit skeptical on that HP, though, because "you get what you pay for." Why would it be $400 -$600 cheaper than another 23" LCD?

You'll probably get about a dozen or more posts for Samsung, maybe not that model. But I like Sony's monitors like the one they have on the VAIOs. They seem very clear and colorful for LCD's and seeem kick ass for movies. They'll say that the display is too shiny or something like that. Shouldn't be a problem unless you have the sun pointed at the screen the whole time. In any case, it has anti-glare and reflection coatings I do believe. I didn't see any reflections on the Sony's in the store.

Well, the contrast ratiois 400:1 compare to 500:1 for the other 3 monitors. It is brighter, though, but that may wash out colors??

The contrast ratio will not hinder you a bit. The Apple LCD is probably the best you are going to find under $5,000. And your video card should support the resolution, just make sure to check with the vendor.

All of them are great choices. My top pics would be the Samsung, the Sony, and the Apple 23".

But keep in mind that only about 10 or 20 people on this board of 100,000 actually own one of these big panels, or is qualified to give an opinion on one. I know I'm not.

Agreed, I have seen the Apple 30" and the Samsung, but not the other two. I am, and most always will be partial to the Apple...:D

But if you haven't already, try doing a little leg work and getting around to places who carry these. If you have an Apple Store nearby it will most likely spoil you, but go anyway and bask in the glory of these fine works of art.

Your opinion and visual perception may be different than others, including myself, so the only way to really get what you want is to pick it out yourself.

Good Luck!

I have the hp 2335, it kicks much ass. :)

Is cheaper than f2304 because it doesn't waste any of your money on built-in speakers.
Is cheaper than same size panel from Apple/Sony because those two vendors always charge a premium for their hardware.

If you want to learn more about it, is huge thread here:

l2335 thread over on hardforums

I would've considered the sony when I bought the 2335, for the somewhat smaller bezel, in a black finish, but not sure I'd want to pay $500 more just for that, especially since the HP has better connectivity, and pivot. There is only one panel out there that it is 23" and 16ms, fyi, so any lcd with those stats is using the same panel.

The only reason you could pick the 23" apple over the 23" hp is because you like the styling, if you compare them feature for feature, the HP walks all over the Apple. Be advised, if you pick the apple, there is no way to adjust its color temperature if you're using a pc...

samsung's new 243T monitor is very nice. even though it's only 25ms, its wiht new technology, and ghosting is very minimal. some say its better then some 16ms ones.

Here's a review of the Samsung LCD

The review states that most present and modern fast games dont ghost at all, and at certain color settings, ghosting is barely visable. you will not be able to notice it unless you tried looking for them.

The new line of Apple monitors connect via DVI, and thus are just as adjustable as any other monitor.

peruse the official apple forum if you're thinking about the cinema HD 23" panel. :)

official apple forum for 23" cinema hd display

I'm not sure why you'd want to give up pivot, give up picture in picture, give up multiple inputs---including component, give up vertical adjustment, give up internal power supply, settle for a lower contrast ratio, and on top of it...pay more, just for the apple panel.

I'm usually a fan of apple hardware, but the new 23" panel just isn't competitive.

I just finished watching another DVD on my Samsung 213T. At this point, I'm leaning towards the Samsung 243T, even at 25ms. It's bigger, and bigger is better. :D

GamePC.com reviewed the Samsung 243T on 2004-07-21 and liked it.

Is there a problem using TigerDirect.com? They are selling it for $1900 which includes a $200 mail-in rebate. I've read horrible reviews about TD, though.

I'd stay away from Sony at all costs. Even if the company's utter lack of ethics doesn't deter you, the horror stories so many people have of their Sony product (which often costs 2-3x as much as the competition) dying after a year or two of use should be enough.

Um, I don't know where you where you got that idea. I don't think a corporation like Sony could get so big and have a reputable brand name selling broken PS2's and Trinitron monitors outside of a crack den in tokyo(if there are any).

HalosPuma, what did you end up buying? I'm looking for a 21+" LCD myself. I like the Planar PX-212M 21" LCD, largely from its specs and the fact that it has s-video inputs (I can plug in my Playstation 2 if I really want to). I do largely programming, Photoshop, and gaming.

HP L2335 warning: this monitor will stretch 16:9 material into 16:10. As of yet no solution has been found.

Well, my 6800U is on RMA, so nothing yet until I get 1600x1200 DVI-D working well. I saw the 23" WUXGA at Fry's Electronics, but wasn't impressed. The display height is smaller than my 213T! At this point I'm leaning towards getting an additional two 213T instead of a single 243T since they cost the same. At this point, I would rather have an LCD with no dead pixels a little slower reponse (25ms on my 213T), than one with some dead pixels. However, Christmas is coming soon - I'm sure prices will drop even more AND newer, faster, higher quality monitors (no dead pixels) will be available.

Size?Yeah I always warn people about 15 and 17 inch widescreen displays. I think that's stupid for laptops as well.

This thing also has 3840 x 2400 native resolution, but it costs almost 8000 dollars. I guess that's what you pay if you want the best.
