Best 19" monitor for text?

I may have made a mistake on my last monitor purchase. I got the Princeton Ultra 92 (19&quot😉 for $289 and it seems ok, but I didn't know of AnandTech's forums before and couldn't ask for your advice then.

Should I get another for better text? I surf and program and use my Ultra now in 1152x864.

Thanks

For better text, get a shadow mask monitor.
But an aperture grill could also be as good especially when paired with a card with kick ass 2D like Matrox. Pair it with either of the two most hyped and recommended monitors here in the forums, Samsung 900NF/1200NF or Sony G400/G500.

For a sharp image I'd recommend a CTX PL-9, actually. Not a trinitron, and good for seeing corners on the pixels.

The Samsung 950P does have good text quality. I got one about 3 weeks ago from Onvia and have been in love with it ever since. And it's not just the text that's good... the colors are also very rich. I could not be happier with this monitor. I looked at the Samsung 955DF and a few high end ViewSonics but I chose this one. I'm running at 1280x1024@85Hz.

Getting back to your original question... I wouldn't change your monitor unless you are really not happy with how the text looks on that 19". And at 1152x864, the text should be big enough so that it's very clear.

I also wouldn't change your monitor unless it's really giving you problems. It's obviously not the greatest monitor but if it is okay, then I would hold off.

But regardless, a shadow mask like the Samsung 955DF or a Hitachi ErgoFlat (CM715, CM775...) would be best. Like Biggs said though, a quality aperture grill could be almost or as good as a good shadow mask.

Thanks for the replies.

I know I'm going to keep the Ultra 92 atleast until I see it's performance in my new system, specifically the upgrade from my Matrox Millenium w/ 2MB memory to the Matrox G450.
Yahoo!

I will then atempt to increase the res... a notch higher.

I can see by the sudden drop of posts that my last post has set a sense of finality and no further recommendations are being volunteered.

Please, if anyone has input on a text monitor, please post it. With the G450 I can have dual heads so 2 monitors are probably in my future. I still need atleast one excellent text monitor.

Thanks.

I'll say again that for $400 dollars the Hitachi CM772 is a nice monitor. I'm running True Color (32 bit), 1280 by 1024 pixels, at 100Hz refresh rate and text is razor sharp (ATI Radeon 64MB DDR w/VIVO). The contrast and brightness is good as well. Focus remains good in the corners with the only problem cropping up as slight geometry distortions on the left and right which you can abrogate by adjusting the geometry controls using the nice on-screen menu.
