I am wondering what all your opinions are about the best 19" CRT ever made?
If cost is not an issue. What is hands down the best? What has the best image quality, colors, clarity, geometry,
convergence, and resolutions and refresh rates?
Also, why do you think this monitor is the best?
Please give details.
I am not interested in 21" CRT's or LCD's.

Thanks. :)

I'd have to say any 19" sony FD trinitorn followed by the 19" diamondtron from NEC but I'm partial to apurature grill instead of grainy showmasks.

I really like NEC!! my 17" FE700+ has GREAT picture quality... best I've seen.
better than my 900IFT Samsung... the Samsung is crisp, but not as vibrant.

I have a Dell P991, I think it's based on a Sony Trinitron tube. Runs 1600x1200 @85Hz, which is brilliant (my usual desktop res), and I've been using it for 4 years or maybe more with no problems (well, sometimes the screen shifts a little when it's switched on, but it's easy to shift - the monitor has a nice OSD to :))

Over the years I have used Mitsubishi, NEC (back before Mitsu bought them), Sony, Viewsonic and Samsung. I would say that the top of the line Mitsubishi models are by far the best. That goes for all the sizes I have used. Sony is a pretty close second. I think the current top Mitsubishi 19" is the 930sb. Now that they bought NEC there should be an NEC model that is pretty much identical. Though I have seen some indications that quality is still higher on the Mitsu models, though nothing concrete. Spec wise they seem to rebadge the same monitors as Mitsu's or NEC these days.

err have you even used them both? Aperture grills are FAR more grainy than shadowmasks.

i agree. cornerstone might make some better ones, but for the price i love my viewsonic pf795. 1600x1200@85hz & 800x600@160hz both look amazing on games.

that's imposible. Shadow masks have a grill with millions of holes which create dead spots on the picture where light can't be aka/grainyness, while aperture grills grill is only two or three faint lines running horizontal on screen whihc create a dead spot light can't reach. In between is light continuity with no breaks and thus no grainyness.

Good primer which illustrates what i'm talking about

Yup. There's a reason it was ~$550

BTW- BFG with all these crappy monitor suggestions I can understand, now, why people moving to LCD prefer it over thier CRT. They've never seen a good CRT monitor for christ sakes what are we to expect.

that improves contrast and brightness, but that has nothing to do with grainyness. Grainyness is the amount of artifacts you can see on the screen. Like in LCD screens and TVs, you could see faint lines that divides each pixels. On aperture grills(well at least the high end ones i've used), you could see it as well.
Not a bad thing, it actually makes the image sharper, but the colors doesn't look as solid.
Oh and just to add, aperture grill has millions of lines, not two three lines. These are masks that seperate the colors so they don't blend together. it's more like three lines per pixel.

Heh. I actually own a Sony G420S.

I just wanted to see what everyone else says.
It is a shame Sony doesn't make these anymore. I wish I could find another one.
It is by far the best monitor I have ever seen. And I have seen alot.

I have a Mitsubishi 930SB and I must say it's pretty damn good. Colors are wicked. It has Naviset software that lets me adjust screen geometry through software.... pretty awesome.

Mitsubishi customer support is top notch too as I've had to RMA my first Mitsubishi monitor. The bottom right of the screen was edging upwards about 1/16", and this could not be fixed using any geometry controls. The replacement I got is wicked though. I've learned that whatever 19" monitor you get, there will ALWAYS be some pincushioning here or there.

my 2 cents.

iiyama's were highly rated back in the day, and they usually had sky-high refresh rates. I agree that finding out if you have a local repair center is key with such a huge device, as you'll probably have to pay to ship it for repair service.
