Best 17 inch laptop?

My friend is looking for a 17 inch laptop, I haven't kept up on them but I was going to start with DELL. Is there any recommendations? It's not going to be used for traveling, he just wants a all in one machine with no wires.

Does it have to be a laptop? Sony and Apple (and I think HP) all make fully enclosed systems, the only difference between them and a notebook being that you can actually unplug the 17" notebook and go somewhere, not so easy with the systems-in-a-screen setups.

What is your friend going to be doing with it? Video editing, 3D rendering, gaming? A little bit more information is required before you can get an answer.

Given the requirements you mention in your first and second post, definitely check out the HP dv9000z laptops - http://reviews.cnet.com/laptop...5-3121_7-31974915.html.

Know a friend who has one and they look as well as perform great - from his weekly video editing tasks to daily gaming, as well as more mundane browsing / email tasks.

Last I checked, these laptops also have a carbon-fiber shell with some subdued but classy line accent (check out the pics on the net or in person in stores) making them light yet sturdy - I could definitely tell a small but noticeable difference between his new 17" HP laptop and the old one (also 17"). Screen isn't as bright as the high end Sony, Asus etc. laptops for example, but is plenty decent for the price, and then some.

Another great feature of this series of laptops from HP - instant DVD play - no need to boot into windows to play them. My buddy has seen about a 6-7 hour battery life the one time he had a movie marathon. That's definitely one of my favorite features of the newer HP models. Read the details in various reviews on the web.

BTW, love their soft yet not too soft, non-clicking mouse buttons - no annoying feeling in your fingers if you are heavy built-in mouse user. An often overlooked but important ergonomic and comfort feature.

My 2c worth based on detailed second-hand experience with this laptop.

I do like the look of the new HP laptops... not totally over the moon about the "all glossy, all the time" material choices, but as far as the design goes, I rate them a very close second to the MacBooks (Pros included in that). I really like the minimalist look of the MacBooks, but the way HP designed their latest set of machines, they are pimp-tastic looking IMHO

im gonna agree, the HP DV9000 series laptops are quite nice, i know three or four people that have them, yes the glossy gets kinda annoying, but apparently they have two hard drive bays in them(these guys have 250-280gb in them), and the screen is quite nice. not sure about the dvd thing but yeah it does sound right(doesnt have to run background tasks when it doesnt need to). and they are relativly cheap, 1500 on newegg gets you the DV9330(i think) with a 1.8ghz(guessing as well) c2d, 2gb of ram, the lightscribe dvd burner(im pretty sure), and a 7600go, i was considering buying one myself not long ago.
