Best 17" Flat Panel Monitor

I am trying to find a good flat panel monitor for my friend He wants a black one that is 17". I think he said tops would be around 500 he could spend. My problem is that I am too picky, I have been using an apple cinema display lately and nothing matches up. So could some of you recommend on?
 
With only a 500.00 budget for a 17" LCD you have only a few budget models to choose from. Check pricewatch.com to see your choices.
 
After getting the specs together for my brother's computer, he's now also wanting a new monitor. It seems he's also thinking about a 17" flat panel, so I was hoping that maybe there could be some (more?) recommendations added to this thread as to either personal preferences or even hardware reviews out there. No really hardline requirements. Probably no monitor that will totally break the bank, and he doesn't need anything amazing for his purposes - generally just home use, casual gaming, etc. Just needs an idea on what some good middle tier options would be.
