Yep 8600GTS can't even hang with the X1950Pro, it's truly terrible for anything but HTPC stuff.

Depends what you play and at what resolution. In NWN2 it seems pretty much dead even with my x1900, and I expect future games (at my native 12*10) to be similarly shader-determined.

As for "will suck in future games", you mean the ones that the DX9 cards won't even be able to run? Let's face it, DX9 cards are already in the low-end limited lifespan niche. No point in dealing with high-end amounts of power, heat, and noise in that performance category.

okay the x19__ cards wont be playing any dx10 games.. but who says the 8600 will either? lol.

and the ati card has the image quality advantage regardless of resolution and any comparable setting

You're forgetting that there will be DX9 modes in almost all games, as the software companies don't want to leave out the 90+% of the market that isn't running DX10 hardware yet.
