Best 1080P LCD TV over 30"?

Please recommend me an LCD TV to use as a computer monitor.

Uses:

1. General internet browsing & word processing
2. Gaming
3. Watching movies
4. Occasional programming
5. Occasional graphics work

Requirements:

1. Over 30"
2. 40" is prob max (I'll be sitting pretty close)
3. 1080P
4. Terrific colors & black levels

Current Options:

1. Sharp Aquos LC32GP1U: $1100, 32", 1080p, 2000:1 native contrast, 6ms response. Update: the dynamic contrast seems to be a problem for people when using this set as a monitor, so I think it's out of the running.
2. Westinghouse LVM-37W3SE: $800, 37", 1080p, 1000:1 native contrast, 8ms response
3. Samsung LNT4071F: $1450, 40", 1080p, 25000:1 (dynamic), 8ms, 120hz. Could be a bit too big & expensive, but 120hz and the good reviews make this very tempting. will need to go see it live, i guess.

That sharp is supposed to look amazing, however it has a dynamic contrast function which supposedly gets really annoying while surfing. Though its a feature, not a bug so....

I've never heard about this? Where can I read more about it?

The Sharp is being replaced by a new model. The old GP1 will probably become difficult to find as its price gets cut and and inventory gets sold.

There is mention of the dynamic contrast in this Anand thread, which refers back to this HardForum thread.

The issue is that text can be hard to read when the contrast changes when you surf. Some people say that it is not an issue. Probably isn't all that noticeable. Just thought I would mention it. I really want one, im jealous.

At how close you're going to be viewing this TV and because of the size range, you don't need a 1080p set as your eyes won't be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p anyway.

What he said.

But here is the Westinghouse Silver/Black 42" 16:9 8ms 1080p HD Video Monitor Model LVM-42W2 from the Egg to your door for $1,100 - - with DVI -HDCP

I got a Westy 720p w4207 last year on the cheap from BB and luv it. Need to be at 6-7 foot away for best viewing but 3-4 feet works damn good.

And check out AVS to get recommended settings. I thought I had it good - and then recalibrated into bliss ... 😀

given that i'm using this as a computer display, i need it to be as high res as possible. in fact, it's a shame there are no 1200p sets (1920x1200) over 30"...

New Question:

* How is the Sharp Aquos LC32D62U? The specs seem the same as the LC32GP1U, but it's much cheaper (of course... who knows if that store is reliable). It has no DVI, but could you just use a DVI to HDMI converter?

Yes. A DVI-to-HDMI cable should work just as well as if it had DVI. Some computer monitors (ie. Hanns-G 28") have an HDMI port rather than a DVI port and come with a DVI-to-HDMI cable.

As far as determining what size screen you might want, 1.35 times the screen size will put you at a 36-degree viewing angle, which is the recommended THX viewing distance. This would be 3.6 feet from a 32" and 4.7 feet from a 42". You can play around with the sizes with this calculator.

My brother-in-law has a 1080p Sharp (~46 inch), so I did some tests for gaming/computer usage. Well, I found the dynamic contrast "issue" to be VERY annoying... and you can't turn it off! I was testing out half-life 2, and when I turned on the flashlight the entire screen seems to lose contrast (the peripheral view outside the flashlight goes from solid black to a light gray. It's a deal-breaker for me.

So far, I'm very pleased with my 37" Westy, but I'd have no problem going to 42". (I sit 3 feet from the monitor - 1080p is beautiful!)

yea, did some more reading on this issue and a lot of people complain about it. looks like dynamic contrast knocks the sharp out of the running...

however, i'm worried the westy's colors & blacks will just pale compared to the fw900 i'm used to... not sure if it's worth spending $800 to get a (much) bigger screen at the price of lower resolution, worse colors and worse blacks...
