Best 10 inch tablet?

Kinda depends what she wants it for and budget. Has she actually handled some tablets? Some people find the 10" size to be too big, seems like a lot of people prefer the 7-8" sizes quite a bit more.

You might wait a bit, there's possibly some new ones that might be worth waiting for (rumors of a new large Nexus tablet, I forget when new iPads are announced/available, not sure if there's any others that might be out soon).

Samsung makes some decent ones, although they make so many, and their naming schemes are kinda stupid so I can't hardly keep straight what ones are the good ones.

Esp. if it's for your mom, I'd say the iPad Air, or maybe the iPad Air 2 when it comes out.

The 10" tablets are a lot easier to read than the 7-8" ones too, esp. for older eyes.

Yeah the 7" ones are too small she wants a 10" tablet... I cant phrase that in a way that dosent sound weird :\

She has a tesco hudl tablet, thats 7" and too small apparently.

Yeah the naming schemes are fubar from what I can tell. Even apples gone a bit wonky (the ipad air is newer than the ipad 3 right??) but they only ever make like 2 models anyway so its not too tough to figure out.

Let's get the obvious joke out of the way. Your mom's a size queen.

I'd go with the iPad. They're pricey but very easy to use and very difficult to screw up. Yep, the iPad Air is the newest one, but Apple's likely going to do a refresh in a couple weeks.

iPad: Slow single core CPU, 256 MB RAM. Near-unusable these days.
iPad 2: Slow dual-core CPU, 512 MB RAM. Recently discontinued. Not recommended.
iPad 3: Slow dual-core CPU, 1 GB RAM, Retina. Discontinued. Not recommended. Built like a tank - heavy.
iPad 4: Moderate speed dual-core CPU, 1 GB RAM, Retina. Still available. Built like a tank - heavy.
iPad Air: Fast dual-core CPU, 1 GB RAM, Retina. Current top model. Light.
iPad Air 2: ? faster dual-core CPU, ? 2 GB RAM, Retina. Possibly TouchID fingerprint sensor. Due October. Light.

Out of the above, I'd say the iPad 4 should be the minimum to consider, but it's really heavy. The iPad Air is a huge improvement, but really the iPad Air 2 is probably the one to get, and it should be released within 2 months. (Last iPad release was over 300 days ago.) The iPad Air 2 is what I'll buy if it does get 2 GB RAM. I've been waiting it out for years now with our iPad 2.

The Galaxy S in the OP if you want Android, iPad if you want iOS (not much of a choice there lol).

I went through this with someone else, but there was never an iPad 3 released by Apple (i.e. it was only called 'iPad 3' by people much later). Steve Jobs announced the third generation of iPad with the name 'The new iPad' :)

Well they can call it whatever they want, but it was the 3rd generation iPad, so as far as I'm concerned there definitely was an iPad 3. ;)

Yeah, it was called the new iPad, but nobody calls it that. iPad 3 is much less confusing when explaining these things.

The other thing I'll mention is that all the iPads from the iPad 4 on have the Lightning connector. The iPad 3 and before all had the old 30-pin connector.

If she's really into Amazon you might also consider the Fire tablets, not sure if they'll get a refresh soon, but they offer decent value for money. I believe you can sideload Android apps but it could be a hassle.

I'd probably really only recommend them if budget is a big issue though, as you can get all of the Amazon stuff for iOS and Android I believe now (did they finally get the video on Android?), plus you won't be locked into Amazon as much.

What will she be doing? Is she familiar with Windows 8 at all? If so Windows 8.1 Tablets work well too.

The Tab S is excellent. I was never interested in tablets until they came with these well-calibrated, high resolution amoled screens. People pay 1000s of dollars to get this technology in a TV and here's your chance to get it in a portable form factor for $400. It's like the price tags got mixed up.

Cheers for the list

Think its probably between the ipad air 2 or the galaxy tab S. Probably go with the ipad because shes always been curious them. Maybe the ipad 4... how much of a tank is it compared to the ipad air?

Nah im not sold on windows 8.1 tablets, id rather troubleshoot android or iOS.

The iPad Air and iPad 4 are both current models so you can hold them both in-store. The iPad 4 truly feels like a tank in comparison.

Both the Galaxy Tab S and the iPad Air are under 470 g. The iPad 4 is 652 g. It's a 40% weight difference!

Lol it was you wasn't it :D

I don't disagree that there was this iPad people call 'iPad 3'. My statement was that Apple never released such thing. People call it that because it's the most logical and descriptive name for it, not because Apple gave it that name.

Yeah, it was called the new iPad, but nobody calls it that. iPad 3 is much less confusing when explaining these things.

Nobody calls it that because it's a stupid name. I remember watching the release and immediately thought "this is dumb! what are they going to call the next one? The newer iPad?". This particular model didn't even make it a year. It was only ~200 days later when Apple introduced the iPad 4 and completely erased all trace of the 3rd gen. iPad from its website (while still selling iPad 2). The iPad 3 was basically the iPad that never was. I just find this amusing.

To get back on topic. Yes, OP. It's Tab S vs. iPad Air (2) for the best ~10" tablet to date (almost out) :D

The new iPad Air?

I was actually wondering what they'd call the thing. I'm thinking just "iPad Air", but with "(2014)" after it in support materials.

I think part of the reason for apple's "covering up" of the ipad 3 is the fact that most people can't be bothered to find out how the two are significantly different and given the choice between two generic "ipads with retina screens" they're strongly tempted to go with the cheaper one.

The ipad 3's name still made more sense than the ipad 4's. It was the "ipad with retina display", nevermind that there already was an ipad with retina display, which bewilderingly they didn't call that, despite that it was a much more standout feature at the time it was released. And now of course they can't call the ipad 4 what they've always called it or it would imply that the other ipads don't have retina screens, which most that are being sold now do.

Hello Eug, I want to know why did you say iPad 2 is not recommended? There are so many people still using iPad 2 and all apps are fine with it. I haven't heard anyone complained about apps crashed even with 512MB memory.

I have an iPad 2 and it works OK, although its non-Retina screen looks dated. However, some of the more complex apps can stress it out, and I have a sneaking suspicion it won't get updated past iOS 8.

But you can't buy one new now anyway. You'd have to get it used. I suppose if you could get it cheap ($200), it could be worth it, but then you wouldn't have a warranty.

Plus, it's a bit heavy.

ipad.

i have a nexus 7 (7" not 10") and this thing pretty much sucks. i can't believe how it lags and stutters on such basic shit. i only got it so i could test out an android game i was making on an actual device because the android emulator is the worst piece of crap you could imagine having to test apps out on. the nexus 7 even stutters when scrolling on a freaking table layout with some basic graphics on it. i just don't understand why it's like that.

when i'm around my house and want something mobile, i use my iphone 4 (not 4s, the normal 4) over my nexus 7. i think the battery in it has been dead for like 2 months just because i have no need to use it.

Is that Nexus 7 a 2012? Yes it is laggy but people tell me the 2013 is much better.
